Acoustic get together and Braai

Bob-Dubery · 2010-03-25T06:39:54+00:00

Keira and I have been discussing another acoustic get together similar to the one she hosted last year. The proposed date is Sunday April 11th - Keira does not have a gig on that date. Venue is the X-Rated residence. This is in suburban Jo'burg so that really rules out percussion and amplifiers (unless I want to annoy my neighbours - which I don't). So 1: You can come to play and braai or just to braai or even just to play. IMO the more people there are that want to play the more interesting the afternoon. 2: I have covered areas in the garden - so guitars (and people) will have shelter from the elements. 3: I will provide the braai facilities and some snacks and bread rolls. Also a tub full of ice for keeping drinks cold. 4: You bring your own drinks, your guitars, your talent and enthusiasm [edit] and whatever you want to braai[/edit]. It would be helpful if you bought a salad to share. 5: I have parking for (with a squeeze) 6 or 7 cars. We also have a roving security patrol in the area. 6: I have dogs. Not big dogs, but it's their house and they have the run of it. They are more likely to try to scrounge food and pats on the head than to bite. In the past they have been OK with kids. But please don't bring your pets. 7: I don't want to post a complete address on an open forum, but I live in Montgomery Park. If you're saying "where's that" then it's between Melville and Northcliff, right opposite Westpark Cemetery (and yes, we know the joke about "the dead center of town"). 8: Depending on numbers I might ask for volunteers to bring some extra chairs and a couple of umbrellas 9: Start is early afternoon. Say 14:00 So I want to gauge interest. Please indicate if you are interested and additionally if you are interested in playing.

OK, I am still waiting on numbers, but even if a good proportion of those who say they intend to come get ~~hungover~~ the flu, there will be a good, worthwhile turnout.

Everybody who has indicated that they would like to come has been PMed directions.

So to recap. I will provide
1) Braai facilities
2) Bread rolls
3) Some snacks
4) Ice
5) Paper plates
6) Knives and forks

You need to bring
1) Whatever you will be drinking

2) Whatever you want to put on the braai

3) If you don't want to braai then your sandwiches or whatever

4) If you want to play or if you want to show off or if you are looking for a buyer then bring your acoustic guitar(s). It's not mandatory, but it's probably a good idea to bring a guitar if you are interested in the Travis picking workshop. An electric guitar would suffice for that - you wouldn't need to plug in and, as I will demonstrate, Travis picking and electric guitar are not mutually exclusive.

5) If you are coming as a couple then please bring a salad to share.

Additionally, as many of us will be meeting for the first time and won't necessarily know each other that well, please bring some GFSA attitude with you: Friendliness, no religion, no politics.

Just to re-emphasise that this will be a friendly environment, nobody is going to throw things at you are if your playing isn't quite up there with Steve Vai, Paco de Lucia, Keira, Clapton or whoever you think is the bees knees.

I am still waiting for estimates of numbers, so if you haven't PMed in that regard then please do. I may also ask for a volunteer to bring a few chairs.

Maureen and I don't smoke, but smoking in the garden is fine. Please don't smoke inside.

It would be helpful to give an indication of interest in the Travis picking session - there is some printed material for that. I emphasise that this is at introductory level.

Our dogs are going to be on the scrounge. Please don't feed them - they have both had knee surgery and I need to control their weight. I will ensure that they don't starve ?

NB! You should expect speed traps along Beyers Naude Drive, certainly between Northcliff and Melville. There is a permanent speed trap, on both sides of the road, between Northcliff Corner and Montgomery Park.

Don't forget the camera!

OK... I need to get the gardener in and out of the place, dump the garden refuse, have a shower so I am sweet and fresh to greet y'all and then start setting up for X-Stock.

So y'all should have your breakfast, brunch and/or lunch and then start heading for Chateau-X with a view to arriving from 13:00. Playing will start no later than 14:30.

There will be some sound gear here. This is mostly Keira's and she will control it, push all the buttons, twiddle all the knobs and so on. Keira and I will make all the decisions about volume.

We can start braaing around about 16:30 or 17:00. However I know that some people are coming a longish way to get here, so if they need to eat early so they can leave early then we'll have to be flexible.

X-rated Bob wrote One of the fun things about this event for me is that I don't much about some of y'all nor your skill levels nor what you play.

You may be in for a (pleasant) surprise... 8). Please post some pics of the guys and gals in action.....musically that is. ?

Is Brent coming?

It would be cool if he could show us some tapping techniques. I had a go yesterday but it sounds awful. Also some percussive stuff would be good.

Come on Brent ?

The Travis picking sounds good Bob.

An update has been PMed to all those known or suspected to be coming to X-Stock.

Bob-Dubery

OK... I am busy printing out tabs for the Travis picking workshop.

These may also make the basis of a nice introductory lesson to be posted to the relevant new section of the forum.

See y'all tomorrow ?

Forecast is drizzle in the morning, clear and sunny in the afternoon. High UV still, so smear on that factor googleplex.
