SO I dont know who has been up to date with this group Die Antwoord, previoulsy, Max Normal.
there video has hit over 2.5 million views on youtube, and have just signed to Interscope in the USA, thats with DR DRE, and Eminem.
So Listening to their music I realised that there s a reason they have done so well, its because they actually have manged to intergrate South Africa into their music and be bloody clever, and sound great.
The songs arevery clever, and the whole personna is amazing. Really talented, clever trio this........ Just listen to the song on there home page.

I dont know many who are this clever and good at what they do.

Doesnt mean cause they 'made' it they good...
Well I don't think they good... IMO :-\

no you are right making doesnt make you good hence "nickleback" but I think there whole setup is VERY clever, its so over the top its genius, and the music is very good behind it, as well as his rapping, its got flow and its very clever in my opinion.
Why so embaressing though? :-[

The production quality of their music is amazing for SA.

I think his music is catchy and brilliant: I'm your butterfly, I need your prrrrutection ?

Interesting - It never ceases to amaze me how the internet gives people the freedom to express themselves. This rebellious attitude was always there, I suppose, and now that oppression and censorship has lifted, the darker side of a culture can show its ugly head. I reckon this group is just expressing the base language and attitude that has been prevalent around many a braai but never on the way to church.
I wonder whether this group believe what they are saying or whether they are using shock tactics as a vehicle to allow their audience to free themselves from the shackles of oppression.
Why the international success? For the same reason I suppose.
Musically, it's deliberately simple allowing the words to take centre stage. Poetry to a chant?
Whilst chuckling in my beard, I can listen to it in small dooses (sorry Freudian slip there)

Fixed.
They have a good quality production. While I don't like the stuff they put together a really good package.
Once again though, shock value wins.

Shock value certainly has been a great tool to garner fame in rock. Alice Cooper, KISS, Twisted Sister, Slayer, Manson, Gwar. Hell even Elton John, Prince (insert symbol here) and Little Richard shocked in their day. Not to mention the unlimited supply of mid punk bands that werent famous in the mainstream like Peter and the Test Tube Babies.
Rap music only really started shocking people when Ice T came out with his gangster driven songs with tons of swearing. (a move quickly followed by almost everyone in Rap except Fresh Prince)
I remember when Vannessa Mae came onto the scene in the 90's and the classical community got a bit edgy about this girl with a Blue violin and blistering runs......
I guess there is a bit of darkness in all of us that deep down needs to be satisfied by bands like this..... I guess that is why we watch the News..... and Baywatch!

Its strange, I dont like them, but they are really interesting and can watch them over and over again. Pretty cool, but suck at the same time ?
Tamago
I don't like them either
And having made it does not mean that they are necessarily good either.
It is much more than that... as I am sure you who are pros, know.
MIKA-the-better-one
Idno man seeing them live as maxnormal they were awsome, very good, great rap act. Fair enough if you dont like them, they arent my fave either but they are pretty good musically and live, better than most SA acts I have seen... minus the blk jks

I think we tend to judge rap on the wrong criteria. Musicianship is not what makes a good or mediocre rapper. The lyrics they use and the way they string said lyrics together is what makes some rappers incredibly special and talented.
Eminem did not stand out of the raP crowd because of dre's beats. He stood out because until he came on the scene nobody strung lyrics together like he did. He basically started a brand new style of rapping (remember we are talking vocally and lyricly here and not about the music laid under the vocals.)
In fact if rappers were to judge rock on the same criteria that they use to judge themselves then a whole lot of rock music would be quite laughable to them.
Lets face it, there have been some really poor lyrics written for otherwise incredible rock songs (californication anyone?)
The guys that stand out in rap also tend to focus on a story in each song.... which tends to draw people into a song more.(ask Dylan or even The Arctic Monkeys)
That all said I dont listen to rap because it just isn't my thing, BUT I can most certainly appreciate the talent that rappers have with lyrics and speed of delivery and lyric composition.
Talent that I will never have.

Like the worlds obsession with Paris Hilton, F1 racing and Days of our Lives, I just dont get it. At all. Flavourt of the week at best.
MIKA-the-better-one
I would hardly call F1 flavour of the week, thats a pretty stable industry right there. Rap has also been pretty big for awhile now......
chris77
He he? Naah, I meant die antwoord is a bit of a flavour of the week. (The other two are amazingly popular, and I just dont get why:-S) I dont see them getting by on hype alone for too long. That 1st album of theirs better be a cracker, and even the odds are stacked. Odd is great until you get used to it... Anybody remember Fran Drescher as The Nanny? Or Scatman Joe?
Danny-B
They also have an incredible website. Check out the secret chamber, I think it's awesome.

They're like Disneyland for skollies. Hectic production, you can's fault them on that. And they're so focused on the viral marketing and they nailed it. Man, I can just see them making SO much money from merchandise. There's a big link in my mind with that movie last year, District 9.
It's a bit of a relief I guess, becuase everything exported since the 80's has been waaay too politically orientated. No offence Jonny Clegg or Leon Schuster.
IceCreamMan
just cracked the top 40 in the uk ......well done to em ...
singemonkey
No these guys are not just a gimmick. They're extremely creative and they have amazing skills. It's still weird that it works internationally (it's really funny commenting on them in international fora guys. You should try it, e.g., "No my china, you bin rooking too much zol." Await response ?)
They are as Mika says, talented, original, and wear their South African-ness on their sleeves.
Doesn't mean I like 'em though. Too close to home I guess. Also I've never really been a fan of humour in music. Funny stuff I find I can almost always only really enjoy once - Zappa (despite the brilliance of his playing and arranging), Tenacious D. Some of my buddies can listen to stuff like that, including my buddy keeping Die Antwoord on heavy rotation chez lui, over and over. For me, I'm sick of it on the second listening.
