Hi All

So I have a silverface fender bassman head with an AB165 cct and am now building up a speaker cab (unless someone has a spare one lying around that they are willing to sell). Cost is not the issue here...but I have to choose between either a vintage 30's or Jensen C12N's. Can you guys offer up some opinions?

Thanks
Jeremy
You want the classic Fender tones, go with the Jensen. Vintage 30s will give you a rockier sound with a grittier high end and more lows.

Go to http://ratcliffe.co.za/sundry/speakers/ and you will find some comparison clips between common speakers (Blues, G12H, Vintage 30, Greenbacks, Jensen C12N) made with the same guitars (Strat & LP) and the same amp (Dr. Z Carmen Ghia). Very revealing.
I must admit...for me the blues and greenbacks just sound so much better! But the blues are not an option with a 50W head. So it looks as though I may have to try hunt down some greenbacks!
If you find out what Yebo Electronics say about supplying the celestions please let us know. I highly doubt that they would get the speakers at those prices, but if they can, it would be great!

If you really want the Blue tone (I know I do), You can either get the Celestion Gold (close to 5K locally and a special order) or order up some 50W Weber Blue Dogs ($195 ea + shipping). I just ordered a Weber Blue Dog and a Silver Bell to go in my Twin.

Have you considered the traditional 4X10" cab for a Bassman?

Tradelius lists the G12M Greenback at R1 710 incl. VAT. They just got stock, so if you get your friendly local music store to order from them and persuade them to give you 25% you'll pay R1 281.65 - and no shipping.
Yeah the celestion gold are def out of my price range! but I def would love them! Whats the shipping cost on the blue dogs bringing the total for the speakers to?

Actually considered loading a 2x10 cab (like the tremolux uses) with a pair of G10 greenbacks, but just think the 12's will give more depth to the tone.

I chatted to Tradelius directly and they offered me R1450 on the vintage 30's which were listed the same price as the G12M's. Alan are you sure that the G12M's are the greenbacks and not the 20W heritage G12M's?

They've given me an estimate of $120 shipping for the pair, but I'm being pessimistic and keeping $200 earmarked just in case. + $390 for the speakers. Including 14% VAT on this side, that gives me a "worst case scenario" of R5 050 and a " Best case" of R4 350.

              Yeah it will. ?

I think you're right. :-[ The Heritage is by far and away a better speaker to my ears though. The standard 25W version is cheaper.
Hmmm...the only issue is if they are indeed the G12M heritage they are 20W which means a 50W head into 2x20W can be a dangerous and costly game to play... I need the 25W greenbacks at least! Those weber blue dogs would be the dogs danglers! But the extra cost is a little much...especially if they end up near 5k ☹ I would rather use the extra cash to recap the head and for new tubes...
I have just found out however that you can get a Blue Dog 50W at 4ohms in which case I would not need a 2x12cab (2 8ohm speakers in parallel to get match my head). Wonder what a 1x12 cab would sound like...hmmmm the intrigue

The greenbacks are also available in a 10" so you can go the classical 4 x 10 option with Greenbacks if you want...100W 4x10 will sound really awesome.

BTW I have a G12M Greenback in my project cab and I'm very chuffed with the results...
