Another few golden rules:
Don't make friends with people at work.
Don't become part of the cliques- They will destroy you as sure as the sun will shine.
As an adjunct to the above mentioned- share the bare minimum about yourself at work, they will either try and exploit you, or worse, use that info as ammo against you. Keep your home life a secret. Don't even mention to them that you play guitar or that you are a keen golfer.
Keep religion out of the workplace. DO NOT send e-mails round even though your heart is in the right place. Also do not reveal your religious affiliation. I have seen this go bad very spectacularly on a number of occasions.
Do not partake in office chain e-mails and what I call "corporate spam" i.e. discussions on e-mail about people and or company strategy.
There is no such thing as a good boss, and there is no such thing as a perfectly good company to work for either. The best boss and company to work for is yourself and your own company.
This is all fine if you want have a miserable working enviroment.
Be who you are, dont put on a different mask for work. My love of guitar has got me far at my corporate enviroment.
And if you dont befriend anyone, how the hell are you going to spend 40 hours a week sitting next to these people.
There isn't a perfect Boss or Company!, but the same can be said of Wives, Partners, Friends. But you dont give these up because they might/will let you down, do you?
Being your own Boss is fine if you are gifted in that way, but if by chance you have to work in a corporate enviroment. It's up to you to weigh up the positive and negative. I have, and I focus on the Positive! And I am sure being your own boss has pros and cons as well.
