Harties Woodstock

NorioDS · 2010-03-01T10:44:57+00:00

So, it's official, my friends @ Harties are cool with us going there for a biggish jam. It's obviously quite far to go on a regular basis but, maybe, once every 3 months is doable. Now, if you guys haven't figured it out yet, I'm terrible at organising things, so I'm posting this thread so you can help me make this happen. We need to discuss what will be needed, and then discuss who'll be providing it, as well as other logistics which simply would never cross my mind but that you guys will think of :) Updated: 12 May 2010: Where is it? Bronze Age Foundry Map (You can also get directions here from wherever you're coming from): http://maps.google.co.za/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=S+25%C2%B0+41'+14%22+E+27%C2%B0+51'+44%22+&mrt=all&sll=-28.45,24.7&sspn=28.574147,39.506836&ie=UTF8&ll=-25.701325,27.868967&spn=0.057618,0.077162&z=14
The entrance from the R513 is Nr 16. There are big signs that say Jo Roos Gallery and also Margarte Roberts. Just follow the dirt road, pass the old colapodated white house on the left. Go around the corner (another Margaret Roberts sign) and past a fence on the left made out of grass. Just after that you will see a sign that says Foundry on you RIGHT. As you turn in there, you will see the road fork, take the RIGHT and you are at the Foundry. If anyone gets lost, please give me a call on (079) 384-8612

Bronze Age Foundry, which is a shed of about 70 feet long and 40 feet wide. The Eastern and Southern sides have walls and the other 2 sides are open, so you can see the sun but you are in the shade always, unless you want to sit on the edge of the foundry and catch some sun. There are several power points as well as 3 phase power if ever needed. There is one toilet and a place to wash dishes, hands, face, brush teeth or whatever. There is a very old, but still working fridge and freezer that can be used but your own cooler would be better (then you are in control of your booze, he he he)
When is it? May 15, 11am onwards. What will be available? - PA system(s) - A drum kit - 3 bass guitars - 2 bass amps - Electric keyboard - Coupla electric guitars - Acoustic electric - Some harmonicas - 12 String guitar - Shakers - African drums - Electric points - Braai areas - Tent area (where some can pitch a tent so as not to drive home drunk :D) - Lots of parking What should each person bring? - Guitars - Bass guitars - Keyboards - Cables - Mics - Stands (!!) - Monitor amps - Extension cord(s) - Meat to braai - Drinks to, er, drink - A cooler box + ice packs for your drinks and meat - Power strips - Extra strings - Vocals :) (get liefie on-stage!) - Lights (if you have :)) - Sleeping bag(s) - Tent(s) - Water bottles (!) - Braai grids, tongs, etc Please keep in mind We will be in someone's backyard, so to speak. Be respectful of our hosts and of your fellow members. And most importantly, clean up after yourself :) Also: Take care of your stuff. If you're providing lights or borrowing someone your guitar, don't go off and get drunk/stoned/etc. Be around to pack it up again later in the day. A little bit of diligence will go a long way! My cell nr is (079) 384-8612 for further assistance. I will be offline as of 8pm tonight, Friday, 14 May 2010.

I am very excited and so happy that you (Norio) and I made this thing come together with the help of our friends!!! So glad that I met you, I have missed your presence in my music life.

See you there ?

NorioDS

Those of you who need to study - maybe come for the afternoon and leave @ 5pm or so? Just a thought. It's not all or nothing, we'll take 1 hour of your time over no hours of your time ?

NorioDS

Oh and if you're bringing meat to braai, bring a bag of charcoal or half a bag, just in case. I'm not sure if we thought of that yet but it just occurred to me now that there might not be any wood/charcoal there so it's best if we provide our own. Even if it ends up coming back home for future use - better safe

I'll try. No promises.

There weren't a lot of people there but man that was fun ?

I got a lift from Christo (WantsChaz) and we arrived there mostly without incident (we traveled 1km in the wrong direction). Once we arrived, I was pretty much in awe of the cool set up ? I mean, all the gear was there and everything was up and running and just waiting for us to plug in. Huge kudos to Steve and Li for setting that all up! That was awesome to see ?

So, ja, everyone just hung around for a while. We all introduced ourselves to one another and talked crap for a while.

Eventually, Li (vocals), Steve (bass) and drummer-guy (don't recall his name ?) started jamming some of Li's songs. She invited Christo & myself up and we jammed some more, fitting in where we could and then... Stratisfear/Brendan came on stage and pretty much blew us all away ? Great playing, very versatile, and just knew what to play when.

I was cooking in the winter sun (ja no really, it was moerse warm!) and struggled to get "my sound" from my Korg. I normally plug it into my little speakers at home and so hearing myself so loud coming through Steve's PA was something else altogether! Definitely an enjoyable learning experience for me.

Later we braaied our wors and a Peter/Pieter from the forum joined us. He stuck around for a beer or 2 and braaied some wors as well and then left.

So ja, we jammed again a little later and called it a night at around 18h00.

There was probably a grand total of 5 forum members there but it was awesome all the same. And, now, we know where it is, we know how to get there, we know what the layout is like and, ja, I think we're ready to do this again on a larger scale ?

Thank you to everyone who helped make this a possibility, especially our hosts, Steve & Li. You guys had everything set up before we even got there and that was just awesome! PS: Li your directions were spot-on - thanks ?

Hey, thanks, Norio. It was good to meet more forum members. And yes, a massive thank-you to Steve and Li, who obviously went to a lot of effort to make us feel welcome and sorted. And it was worth attending if only for the story of how WantzChas got his nick... Hahaha!

Why ohwhy didnt get online earlier, and forgetting my convrsation wth Strat a few weeks ago about this.. I was dead bored in JoBurg today.. This seems to be the great debate that I have with myself. Thus I have to follow a strict rule from now on 'SPEND MORE TIME ON GFSA!!'

NorioDS

A very good rule, Neps! I commend you ?

aja

there will be a next time, right? ?

NorioDS

Yep, I'm thinking of doing one just after the WC and just before holidays are over. So that puts as at around July 17th. How does that sound?

MikeM

Sounds perfect to me ?

17 July.. Ag No.. Then I'm out of the country again.. This sux!! Well, I might be back in SA in September so who knows, then I'll be there whenever these events rise up again!

WantzChas

It was a lot of fun. I especially enjoyed the part where the guy drove the truck off of the foundry. Didn't see that coming. The drunk guy's definition of abundance was hilarious. When there's a next time I'll definitely attend.
