Hello All!!

Greetings from Cape Town. I've been playing on and off since 1988. Mostly classical guitar, rock and metal. Lately I have been more focused on progressive rock/metal, metal and trance. Main guitars: an Ibanez Jem77FP and two Ibanez J-Customs. My primary mission is to get my recording skills and setup up to scratch!! Kind Regards, Z

The Jem you played, Squonk, is the JEM7V-WH, the 77 and 777 are slightly different models......... ? ?

The 7V is the most unforgiving Jem I've played. When you're precise and get it right it makes you sound amazing, but the opposite is also true... The 7V also has the highest output pups of the lot and an Alder body which makes the overall natural tone quite treble. The Jem 77 and 777’s sound very similar imo, with basswood or American basswood bodies and lower output Paf Pro’s or Breeds. The 77 and 777’s have a warmer tone with lower output compared to the 7V. I prefer their natural tone and they’re also not as unforgiving as the 7V. Where the 7V shines is when it’s saturated with effects. It’ll cut through the mix where most other guitars’ tone would get drowned out by all the effects.

The main reason I went for J-Customs is their wood selections. They have incredible natural resonance and a warm, full tone mainly due to the mahogany body. I’ve been playing a Jem77FP for many years and this time round I wanted more natural tone and resonance out of my instrument. The J-Custom really sings and I don’t need to use many effects to get the tone I was after. I really couldn’t be happier with them. I am looking forward to see what the new Floral Jem will look like and what the specs will be. If it’s going to be similar to the previous FP but with an AANJ, I’d be very interested in one to cover the more processed sounds… (and if finances allow it, of course!) ?

Once I listened to it a few times I started to love it more and more!
Thanks for helping with the images! You can check out my lady's under Gear: In Luv with Ibanez, if you wish.
Have you no shame! On this forum I'd rather check out your ladies under the "Gear: In Luv with Ibanez".

Yours pedantically

What was that? Ibanez are doing a new production model floral JEM? Or did I miss something...

Yes, Steve Vai and Ibanez have been working on a new Floral Pattern Jem. I have seen sneak photos, but they're not confirmed. They where going to launch the new FP in the beginning of 2010, but there where some delays so the launch date was extended. I was in the market for a new Jem, but when I heard about the new FP, I decided to wait a little longer. I just hope they're not going retro like with the RG550 and staying with the square heel joint. If it doesn't have an AANJ, it would probably be a deal breaker for me...

Interesting, thanks for the info. That's one string too few for me ? although I might be tempted... the UV MC reissue was of great interest to me, I'm just also not too happy about the square joint. Oh and the small issue of them pricing it out of the ballpark.

The new MC UV is absolutely stunning! I’d love to own a MC Universe or Jem. I totally agree with the neck joint and price, though... I've been contemplating acquiring a UV for some time. Bonus that they cost less than a Jem. (Never understood why?) My excuse has always been that I wanted to become more proficient on 6 before I move on to 7... ???

LOL have you checked out the UV MC reissue thread I started? Most 'normal' people apparently don't see the beauty. ? I think UVs cost less because of supply & demand, simple as that.

My excuse has always been that I wanted to become more proficient on 6 before I move on to 7... ???

Never stopped me, I'm happy to suck equally on any number of strings HAHA. That 7th string is mostly there for heavy riffing. A crucial songwriting tool in my case.

I checked out your Universe MC thread... Funny how most posts are against the MC. Without getting personal, I'll rather just say: I'd LOVE to own one, or at least just play one for an hour or seven! -But with an AANJ. Stunning! 8)
