Then and later PICS....a gig in 1965

Hi All...thought I would share these pics with you.

The Day Trippers playing at an "End of the Year " dance in Uitenhage, December 1965. . It was a formal doo, thus the ties etc.
From L to R : John(16), Vic (16),(that's me ? Pierre (15), and Jannie(16).
The amps in the backline are a Vox AC30, Fender Blackface showman and a Teisco Checkmate 45. Jannie is at an "instrument" which produced electric piano and reed organ sounds. I am strumming a Carlton guitar.
These dance halls were normally large venues and 400-500 people would attend.

The bottom pic shows us in October 2009, 44 years on....(and I'm still using Vox !) at a rehearsal at Markotter Stellenbosch. L to R: Vic, Pierre, John and Jannie. First time together again in 40 YEARS !

Hey Vic, that is simply amazing, I am gobsmacked!!!! The same line-up for over 40 years!!!! That is better than any band I have ever heard of in my life........you guys deserve a STANDING OVATION from all on this forum, I stand up and salute you........!!!!

I will certainly try to dig up some pics of my bands in the late 60sand early 70s. The last time I played was as a session musician backing Richard Jon Smith in the late 70s......then I went on to do all sorts of other stuff, until recently when my passion for the guitar started all over again.......and of course with my boy Eli, when he's not too busy smashing his head all over the place!!!.... see:

@Aubs...thanks mate. Not exactly 40 years continously together. Last time we played together was in January 1969 (Feather Market Hall, PE) along with the Dealians...then our ways parted. I came to Stellies to study and the rest of the guys went their own ways and joined other groups. Jannie for example went into the Airforce and is today a SAA pilot flying the JhB-London route....so listen out for Cpt Conradie next time you fly to London ?
John is in England still doing his thing...great drummer. But in Oct 2009 we decided to get together again...what a great few days we had. Decided to redo our "Extended Play" recorded in '68 , here in Stellies at the end of 2010...will keep you posted.

Thanks Vic. I really wish we could all have the same memories. I imagine myself back in that hall, being myself - critical, but loving it too. Probably kakking out the SA efforts in my head. But still thrilled that it's all happening in front of me. Please write more about your experiences. Especially the difficult stuff that you'd rather forget. It's going to be important for us in the long term. One day, as with all important stuff, there's going to be nothing left but what's written.

Did you get to London at all back then?

Your generation made it all for us.

Ok......I played with JHB group (The Strangers) at the Feathermarket hall in PE. We toured with, and opened for The Flames (who were now just called "Flame") on their last tour to SA before they split, and Ricky Fataar (now with Bonnie Raitt) and Blondie Chaplin (now backing muso with The Stones) went on to play with The BeachBoys. That was in the early Seventies! Did you perhaps come see The Flames then? (Sure nobody remembers who opens!!).....hahahaha.....

Thanks SM....keep in mind that '65 was the height of the British Invasion and any group back then (here and abroad) did the Mersey Beat thing. That was the only way to get work ha ha ?. Went to London for the 1st time in '72 and by then the scene had changed significantly.Tin Pan alley (Denmark street) was really alive but gone was Carnaby street clothing, the Club scene was now Disco ! and the music was heavy bluesy....festival type gatherings with 1000's of high people sitting around.
In the 60's one could pay your keep at Varsity by gigging...great times. ?

I'm sitting watching Zeppelin just burning it the hell up in '69. Not everyone could see that. Probably a lot of people didn't think it meant anything. My aunt was furious because my grandparents were staying in an hotel in which the Stones played a gig. But they didn't go downstairs... ☹

Every blues-rock guitar player wishes he/she could have hit 18 in '66...

Yes...the 60's was something very special. Everything, from fashion to music, was fresh and new AND the SA economy was booming too. ? The Beatles and Co really changed the world of pop music. Next was Hendrix and Led Zep...again new sounds, new techniques. I think it was more or less at this stage when bands began to experiment with many things. Also somewhere in between the Beatles released Sargeant Pepper's and the Beach Boys released Pet Sounds. These two albums had a huge influence on the way forward for popular music at the time. It became increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to perform such music live.... ☹ On the other hand, blues or rhythm and blues, became quite fashionable and popular in the latter part of the decade amongst the europeans thanks to Eric Clapton and Co.

No, unfortunately I had left PE by the 70's...but I will never forget the Flames..AND RJS !. ?. Aubs, try and get a few historic pics on the board....

Hey Vic - fantastic memories hey?
Afraid I have no pics of our band of the 60s - very sad. But like you guys, we got together again recently - that is three of us, sadly one of our members died 20 years ago - but we have another old toppy replacement who played with one of the guys in our band 25 years ago.
We've practiced resolutely once a week for the past 18 months and have played at several gigs during that time. We now have a rehearsed book of about 75 covers ranging from numbers from the 50/60s to current releases. Rockabilly, rock 'n roll, blues, west-coast country, light jazz - everything except metal, which by the way I have resolved to work on this year.
Yeah, very privileged to play with my old buddies again.

That is just amazing Vic! 1965, the year I was born. Thanks for sharing this. It must have been an amazing moment when all of you got together and played again. And something for us younger guys to look up to, and strive for. We can do this for many, many years to come provided that we have our health. So much better than things like sport, or our jobs, which we can't and probably wouldn't want to do for many many years. It's the music that endures and stands the test of time.
