While my guitar gently we... holy cow Prince has just blown me away!

It's good. Really good. Really really good.

We that grew up in the era of the spaghetti western know that you should never underestimate the man with no name. ? I have a great respect for him as a musician and composer. He plays 27 different instruments - all well apparently.

Prince is a major talent. Underestimate him at your own peril ? He seems to farm out a lot of the guitar playing chores live and on record, but I'm guessing that's so that he can focus more on other jobs. It's certainly not because of his own shortcomings as an instrumentalist.

Lethe

Hell yeah. What a rockstar. Awesome.

He is not just great, he has so much fun, and puts in so much SOUL...........

Check out his live solo on Purple Rain, ..............awesome......

I prefer Prince's performance here to the other guitarist who takes the lead role initially. That guy basically recycles the original licks. Prince plays something novel but still in keeping with the song and respectful to Clapton's part on the original track. without being imitative.

And what a showman! He's hardly there until that solo comes in. Then he's stage front and making sure that nobody will forget him. Even when it's all over he has one last trick up his sleeve - throws that guitar up and walks. ~~Elvis~~ Prince has left the building.

That last piece of showmanship was classic... A couple of obvious Hendrix homages too, the sleeve slide particularly...

Brilliant!

That would be Mark Knopfler.

Could there be a more star-studded lineup than that! Wow - all those great names on stage together: Petty, Knopfler, Winwood, Lynne, et al.

For what it's worth I think Knopfler's solo was tasteful and controlled, and while I really rate and appreciate Prince as a musician, I think his solo was far less controlled and relied too heavily on the corny showmanship.

Thankfully tastes vary ....

I don't think so. It's the bloke with the cap on Lynne's right. If you can't see his face then look at the right hand.

I have a fairly high quality copy of that clip and it's not Knopfler. Vaguely familiar, but I don't know who it is. The other acoustic guitar player is Dhani Harrison, Georges son.

Yup Bob you're absolutely correct! Sorry about posting sounding so positive but being wrong - it's one of my pet hates :-[
So I did some research and it's Marc Mann. Here's the correct low-down on the players (again - what a lineup!!):

The line up was unusual. Let me add, the fact that it's a fantastic song doesn't hurt. George remains by far my favourite Beatle.

AlanRatcliffe

Speaking great line-ups - Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Roger McGuinn doing Dylan's My Back Pages at Dylan's 30th anniversary concert in New York City in 1992:

For a bonus 10 points - who is the Tele Player standing relatively quietly (aside from the shirt!) in the background?

That's just so typical Prince........makes a statement.........geez, the poor roadie who was supposed to catch that Tele had to be fast! What a showman!!

Hell, does'nt Dhani look exactly like "young" George?

(BTW JF, John has always been my favourite Beatle!)

Seriously? I always had this thing for John Lennon, mainly because he was just a bit less sugary than Paul.
But over the years I have come to realize that Paul was the Man, especially when it came to songwriting. I think George would have come out of his shell earlier had John and Paul allowed it.

But my choice would still be John, Paul then George. Sorry Ringo!

Steve Cropper?

Looks like Steve Cropper

Yup - Cropper.

Jack-Flash-Jr

I came a-cropper on that one.
