Well, I think you give the lie to that one. Segovia, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, etc. - all playing well into their '90s. So there's hope yet...
At least one thing the people who leave music for career or family do often have when they come back to it is some money. Once they're well established in your career, the mortgage is a few decades old and the kids are out of the house, often a lot of the disposable variety of the folding green stuff is the reward. Those who plugged along with music are usually still struggling to keep ageing vehicles on the road and never got to put much away for another day (rainy or otherwise). Both generalisations of course, but the fact behind some generalisations is they are
generally true.
