A Patlansky New Year

Jack-Flash-Jr · 2010-01-04T11:33:27+00:00

Caught Josie Fields, Farell Purkiss and Dan Patlansky at Kirstenbosch yesterday. Ms Fields and Mr Purkiss (some fun loop station stuff) were cool but having seen Mr Patlansky a couple of times now I have firmly come to the conclusion that he, if he's managed properly, can ignite blues in SA BIG TIME. People who NEVER listen to blues were rocked during the very short set. My first reaction to seeing him at close quarters was that technically he's awesome though in need of some more creative material - but now I just don't care. Let him blow everyone away even if he rolls like SRV.

?
He actually toned it down A LOT compared to his solo gigs!

Renesongs

I saw Dan for the first time in November at the Table Mountain Blues summit on the bill for the day were two other Fender endorsed guitarist Albert Frost and Richard Pryor. Loved AF and RP as always but Dan really blew me away - in fact have at least 100 more gray hairs to prove it. 8)

Dan is one of my idols , having met him in person (have the signator on his latest cd to prove it) . He is a humble down to earth guy , that plays like he is possesed . He plays guitar like hes raping it . And he is the only reason i am now pursuing the blues full time . I listen to his latest album atleast once a day i suggest getting it . Move my soul , you can get it of the net his site or itunes and nokia music .

Having been to both of his workshops(so has Brentcpg), as well as having jammed with him and his band, I can safely say he is phenomenal. Watching him play the obvious opinion you reach is that he's just another Hendrix/SRV wannabe. Recently he really has started to develop his own style, and is slowly moving away from his influences to create his own unique style. To witness him just jamming with the band, and not playing set songs, suggests that maybe he's being constricted by what people are expecting of him now. Everything comes out - Chicage Blues, Country and Jazz Licks. Really sweet stuff. And, might I add, a really awesome dude, who's willing to give time to talk guitar.

And that's what I'm looking forward to a lot - his style maturing into something completely his own. All guitarists are influenced to some degree by others. It'll be well worth hearing.

Bob , in his case yes ........... I have seen him do things we all to scared to do . he plays his guitars , and imo if he broke the guitar he would have them repaired and carry on .

Banditman

Try selling a gig in South Africa with the tagline - "He rapes the guitar". ???

Danny-B

Makes a big change from the usual rape related headlines...

Heath

My apologies for using the word rape .......a very strong word in retrospect . He does things that most normal people wont .

Banditman

Tongue was firmly in cheek - nothing to apologise for. ?

But what you said about his playing reminds me of a thread some time back, about the difference between real musician's instruments and super-special-limited-custom edition AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-grade flame top investment guitars.

None of Dan's will win a beauty contest, and if they were taken anonymously to a lot of collector shops, the condition would be sneered at. The way they sound in his hands wouldn't get a mention, or add 50c to the offered price.

All of which proves the point that instruments are made to be played, cherished and enjoyed. Not pampered in a glass case. Working muso's gear isn't always pretty, but man does it sound good.

Heath

Amen to that .......

I dunno - I've known some players who did what can only be described as "rape" to their guitars - most of the SRV influenced players do it as a matter of course (who was the original guitarist with Lithium? He used to play the hell out of a Strat). SRV was a real powerful Player (as was Hendrix, but Hendrix had such strong hands that he made it look easy).

chris77 wrote To be honest with you I only remember reading the name Robbert Fripp somewhere, next to a picture of a guy looking like a retired botanist

Lol! Yeah, they call him the "Mister Spock of Rock". ? A real unusual player. Like My other hero Zappa, Fripp has two sides, there is a ultra precise perfectionist and someone who also plays really wild, odd solos.

Alan, this is a very unpleasant metaphor to use in this day and age and especially in SA where violence against women has been such a huge issue and a very large blot on our society. Rape is a horrific act which robs the victims of their dignity and self-respect. It's entirely inappropriate to use the word "rape" as a metaphor for vigorous playing of the guitar.

Fair enough.

THAT is what I was getting at... seeing a great player live sells a style better than a recording. No more Hendrix or SRV performances I'm afraid, and people aren't willing to put in the time with an album that sounds strange to the ear at first.
As for the Hendrix/SRV wannabe tag... jeez, I would love to be considered in the category even.

I actually took lessons from Dan for two months about 5 years ago, I still have the messy hand written lessons he jotted down while he was teaching, I still refer to it. I dont know if he still teaches, but when he did, he made it really easy to get into theory, he has a technique which kinda clears the mudd out of the water in terms of theory. I had only heard of his name when I started and didnt really know who he was, but I soon found out I was being taught by one of the greats.
