A Patlansky New Year

Caught Josie Fields, Farell Purkiss and Dan Patlansky at Kirstenbosch yesterday. Ms Fields and Mr Purkiss (some fun loop station stuff) were cool but having seen Mr Patlansky a couple of times now I have firmly come to the conclusion that he, if he's managed properly, can ignite blues in SA BIG TIME. People who NEVER listen to blues were rocked during the very short set. My first reaction to seeing him at close quarters was that technically he's awesome though in need of some more creative material - but now I just don't care. Let him blow everyone away even if he rolls like SRV.

Yup, was there too. Always liked his style (but then I do love SRV). I chatted to Larry Amos the other day and it turns out that Larry taught Dan.
Faryl Purkiss's set was really great cause he used the looper to give his recorded material a whole new spin live which is always cool.
He is also really funny.

All three artists last night really displayed great talent be it in the arts of songwriting or pure technical brilliance.

All 3 knock spots off a heck of a lot of more "famous" SA musos on the circuit.

Seen Dan a few times & I've always been impressed and enjoyed myself. The "managed" comment's pretty fair - there's sometimes a tendency to go on way beyond the average audience member's appreciation limits for a solo. Heck even as a guitarist I've sometimes found myself thinking "get to the point", but he's yet another of our many under-recognised & underplayed highly talented artists.

Having played with Dan in a few small concerts on 5 or 6 occasions a few years back (before he was "famous") I think that he is a phenomenon. I would get distracted just watching him play from close quarters on stage and forget what the hell I was doing. I remember showing him my signature move, a zippy little move that had taken me years to perfect. He took one look at it and did it perfectly, and then said something like "hey I can use it as a turnaround like this, or an ending like that, or play it as a minor like, or invert it like...

You know what I mean.....

I actually was referring to how his career and exposure is managed... solo on baby! ?

Dans next move is recording an acoustic album, I hear... imagine that ?
I played him some Monte Mongomery tunes, So I am hoping he takes them on and does some crazy stuff there too..

I disagree entirely. My impression of Patlansky is that he's playing 3rd hand Hendrix licks - via Stevie Ray Vaughan. He goes for the wrong things too - but then that generally happens with Hendrix wannabes. He goes for all the squeals and the feedback and the effects but can't get anywhere near the musicality that Hendrix had or the freedom and ingenuity that he played with.

I've heard him do Hendrix, and it's grotesque. It's like somebody took a Jimi recording and filtered out all the actual music and just left loads of feedback and whammy bar tricks behind.

Great players don't always make great music.

Extremely entertaining tho. And I think if it was on a Dan Patlansky album it would be a lot different to what the live versions sound like either way... with none of the feedback, and tricks... Album versions are always "underplayed" Or just played how it's suppose to be played..

John Mayer plays tricks and also goes mad when on stage... Not in his albums? They as simple as it comes...
Is that not part of music/entertainment?

@Bob first of all: yes, fine but Hendrix ain't pulling blues into the public ear in SA right now ?

@Fingerpicker: the main thing is NOT to assume he is a niche performer (note I say performer, not recording artist). He should be sold to all of the major festivals (Oppiekoppie and those aimed at older people) and mainstream venues. I saw him at Fogies in Muizenberg WTF. He WILL kill at oppie and others. Put him on the bill at the major live venues in CT with better known acts once or twice, next time people will be there to see him.
Acoustic album? Not excited about that... other albums? Not his strength for all the reasons Bob throws out above. As a performer though... bang. Unfortunately the concerts I am involved with getting together are aimed at the mainstream Black audience in SA (Levi's Rage 4 the Revolution) so I have no pull in the right places.
How good is he in an international market? Well I saw a slide guitarist in a Brooklyn subway station that knocked my socks off in a way that no other live guitarists have yet... it would be tough.

EDIT: I think he might work as part of a regular group, if only to improve branding... Dan Patlansky doesn't roll off the tongue. Branding is VERY NB.

Robert Fripp = King Crimson
Kenny Wayne has a built in huge audience in the US that goes for country type names.
Ask Robert Zimmerman if a name change helped him ?

Hehe, fair enough. For the record, I have just been owned! To be honest with you I only remember reading the name Robbert Fripp somewhere, next to a picture of a guy looking like a retired botanist, telling how he is this moerse influential guitarist and thinking wtf?!? Never heard of King Crimson before now, so will google it tonight while I lick my wounds with a cuppa rooibos and some Norah Jones in the background...

Good stuff, Jack Flash. When touring in the US in New Orleans they changed his name to Dan Patlan for marketing reasons. I think he destabilised the weather system down there, resulting in Katrina. He probably still has a few guitars under water...

I was also at Kirstenbosch on Sunday and thought all 3 of them were really good. Dan did go a bit overboard with the shredding, but when he played alongside Josie and Farryl he did a really good job.
