Hi everyone,

My name is Andre Meyer and I have just launched Tonerider Pickups South Africa.

Awesome! Please add your (rather obvious) affiliation to your signature as per forum rules.

Always nice to see interaction from the resellers on this forum ?

I really like your site and the photos are top notch

Thanks aja,

Trying my best here to bring affordable boutique guitar parts to the SA guitar market. I am busy with The Custom Shop, a larger online store dedicated entirely to custom guitar parts. This venture has fallen 6 months behind, mostly as a result of the generally poor economic situation. But it IS coming!

Welcome! Enjoy the forum! ?

It's hard for people in the biz. We see Alan slap them down hard on their first post ?

Still, I reckon this must be a really good place to get your product heard about. Good luck with it. The more people offering alternatives, the better, I think.

Hi Andre - a public welcome to the forum.

Feel free to edit your first post and add a bit of biographical info in place of my edit notice.

Andre is cool - we already discussed it via PM. Anyway, if I allowed it, then Matta, Musicmadnesscoza, Muz, Tokai SA, Karel, Carel, Graeme and others would have every right to tell me off, because I keep them in strict adherence to the rules.

MikeM

Exactly. I agree wholeheartedly with Alan's strict commercial policy. If guys aren't sure, Alan is only a PM away - they are treading on his turf after all ?

It's spot on. Whereas most commercial posters might avoid directly advertising their stuff and spamming the forum, some will. So it's great to have a policy that protects us. And then it's only fair that guitarforum.co.za should get revenues from adverts.

Welcome Andre!

Kudos for undertaking this venture, SA has long needed alternative options and it is quite an undertaking to start something like this, I know from personal experience. I'll try contact you in the new year and try meet you face to face.

Yip, and trust me, if Alan was in the police force criminals would be living in FEAR! Chuck Norris who? You haven't met the 'Alaninator', LOL.

All jokes aside, Alan does a great job moderating this place. It is a thankless task and one that I'd not wish on anyone, I am MOST grateful for your and Norio's efforts, really I can't thank you enough.

Cheers

Matt

On a lighter note, welcome to the forum. Perhaps organise something with Alan for him to review the pups for the site and maybe even his magazine?

AlanRatcliffe

Thanks guys. Enough about me though - get back to saying Hi to Andre. He sells pickups, so I'm sure many want to be his bestest friend... ?

?

Ray

Hello Andre and welcome here. I def have my eye set on a set or two of your pickups for two Ibanez' I've got but tell you what, I'm going to do a bit of research on how to slap the things in before I order. btw I like your signature "owner" because for me that says "Hey, if something goes right, it's my A. If something goes wrong, it's my F". And all the best with your enterprise man. We will speak soon.

Cheers - Ray

Hi Everyone,

I've just been so busy I haven't had much time to update things and so forth, but thanks for all the welcomes, much appreciated.............and I apologize for stepping on some toes, it wasn't intentional though!

I've had lots of technical inquiries about various Tonerider pickups and I have returned all the emails. I am beginning to wonder if it's not better to post here in order for more folks to see what's been talked about...... and is THIS the right department?

Anyway, everything will come together in time. For those of you want to know - RWRP simply means reverse-wound-reverse-polarity. To simplify even further, when a single coil pickup is wound during manufacturing the wire can either be turned around the bobbin in a clockwise or anti-clockwise fashion. In a twin-single-coil guitar like a Tele either one of the pickups must be RWRP to effect noiseless operation in the middle position of the 3-way toggle switch (the 2 pickups [electro-magnetic devices] are then placed in parallel) . When used on their own it becomes irrelevant whether clockwise or ant-clockwise and either way the sound will be the same. The same applies for the middle pickup on a Strat. If reverse wound you will have noiseless operation in positions 2 and 4 of a 5-way toggle, yet the middle pickup on its own will sound the same whether clockwise or anti-clockwise wound. (Tele: +- -+) (Strat: +- -+ +-)

Hope this sheds some light! All Tonerider single coils are wound this way.

...and the RP stands for flipping the magnet 180 degrees so the magnetic field is also reverse. A positive swing of the string now has the same electrical effect on the output of both pups.

Hi Gearhead, just remember that the term RWRP is usually referred to when dealing with single coil pickups. The RP means that polarity is turned 180degrees through the actual winding of the coil and has nothing to do with the magnets (pole pieces/slugs) that are permanently pressed through the flatwork.

You're actually referring to flipping the magnet though its width under the bobbins of a humbucker. Although this does change the overall polarity of the humbucker (often an easier job to accomplish for someone not familiar with a soldering iron and wiring) the coil windings remain as originally wound. This is normally done when a humbucker is out-of-phase with another one, such as on a Les Paul style guitar.

Hope this helps a bit more!

André
