Anyone know any exercises that might increase my right hand playing speed?

Tried playing the Hysteria Bass line and I just like really JUST can play it to speed but by the time I've played it a couple times my hand dies. Which leads me to my second question.

Will the stamina when it comes to playing come with practice or are there exercises I should do?

I've been playing for about 2 months now.

Thanks ?
Practice - there's no replacement. Start slow with a metronome/drum beat and gradually build up speed. The stamina will come with some time.
Guitar speed trainer pro - is a good training program for building speed. I've seen n00bs that have used this program that can shred like hell after 3 or 4 months but don't know how to play a single chord yet.

Exercises can help in all sorts of ways. Stamina will come with playing BUT don't practice for long periods of time without a break. You can actually injure yourself that way.

        Go easy on yourself.
+1 Alan and Bob, I haven't tried speed trainer so can't comment on that, but as an off bass exercise from Billy Sheehan, work on your recovery muscles .... take an elastic band and place it over your fingers and thumb (gently) then open your hand against the resistance, do this a few times with each hand, go gently often, rather than than hard once in a whilst (as with all practice).

          HTH
            Rene have you tried it?
Actually I do from time to time - It does improved my speed and accuracy but I don't have any aspirations to being guitar gymnast so I flake out after a few days. Also I am not found of doing too much practice in a mechanical unmusical way. Otherwise if it is mechanical speed and stamina you after the program trains you to do just that.

Got the programme after reading this post and, breaking for a holiday and dealing with a two year old aside, Im sure that its doing what its supposed to be doing to my playing

Hi all, I realize that this is an old topic, but where can I get Guitar speed trainer pro that is mentioned? Is it freeware, can I download it etc?

                Cheers

Finally a bass player posting something!

When it comes to speed I noticed most - not all - 'rock' bassists are using a plectrum (pick), yet Jaco for example played at roughly the same speed on a fretless with his fingers. Think about that for a moment. You have to decide depending on your music style what it is going to be - a pick or fingers.

I have been playing for 30 years plus and never used a pick. I still practice 16th notes first slowly and then speed it up using two fingers. Then scales up and down as accurate as possible. It just got easier to play fast over the years! (Should maybe have gone the other way!) Putting in the hours is what it is all about. I jam along with backtracks on my PC...from blues, jazz, to anything at varying tempos. Just don't give up - keep going!
