My parents haven't heard, and I am considerate so my brother (Lives across the corridor) so he's pretty cool with it.
PPIMV is post phase inverter master volume, long story short, it makes the amp sound warmer at low volumes.
It's a brutal 100watts so you can understand my apprehension ? hehe
AlanRatcliffe
The Twin should still sound pretty good down low on the volume, mine lives on 2 (it does sound a bit better on 6, but has the unfortunate side effect of making dogs howl, windows rattle and all my guitars start playing themselves ?). A Twin on 6 is still fairly clean but is putting out a huge amount of volume. A PPIMV mod helps a bit but still changes the tone a bit IMO, so best used with an attenuator if tone is your primary concern, then you can use a bit of both. The Tube Tamer is R1,995 last I looked.
@Squonk PPIMV = Post Phase Inverter Master Volume - a volume control between the Phase inverter Valve and the Power Valves. A Twin is at least 85W and I think Mike's is one of the 100W models.
[EDIT: too slow again]

Good grief, how did you come up with that kind of cash... are you selling your body again? ?
MikeM
Had some saved and my bro lent me some ?
Parents don't help the gas fund anymore... Not for 5 or so years ?
Reinhard
My vote goes for pulling 2 valves and hooking up tube tamer ?
singemonkey
Awesome stuff. Enjoy it.
It's the problem with half the great amps out there. They're just too damn loud. It's a real issue. My bassman also rides between 2 and 3 (and it's only running 3 speakers - don't ask).
MikeM
Less 2 tubes and 1 speaker...

The Tube Tamer
That would rock with your amp!
I know Manfred and I think Alan has tested Graeme's product with great success!

Nice twin Mike!
Did you still rattle windows with 2 tubes pulled? ?
MikeM
Actually took it up to 5 and the door started vibrating. I am not joking.
TomCat
Sounds like you didn't get "a" tube amp...but more like "the" tube amp..... ? ? ?

MAN that sounds AMAZING...
But definately need to sort out replacing some caps to tighten up the bass.

I was using both channels today - using an A/B switch to switch between them. Using a Tube Tamer to bring the volume down by about half.
Reverb Channel
Bright on
Volume 3.5
Treble 6
Mids 10
Bass 10
Reverb 3 (But with an AT7 in the Reverb driver, more like 1.5 with an AX7)

Intensity 0
Normal channel
Bright on
Volume 5
Treble 6
Mids 10
Bass 6
Mine was recently recapped and has Celestion speakers in, so the low end is quite tight.
MIKA-the-better-one
dude let me know where you do that, as I also have to pump my bass at 8 or 9 to get a good sound. I just had mine checked by a tech but was not impressed sadly, it came back just the same as when i sent it.
MikeM
Ok so it's not only me that sees the amp as a little bright..
Wow, I might pop an AT7 then.. Also want to put one in the champ. Dam I should've bought some.
Mika, the bass is not lacking, but it's flabby - which bothers me. Maybe I should close the back up ?
MIKA-the-better-one
you could close it, but then it might defeat the whole Twin status. Try caps that should be it. I am gonna find someone to do mine. The tech who i just got mine back from took it for two weeks I gave him a list of ossible things to fix, such as a rattle when i hit low notes and the LED not lighting up all the time, and none of it was done. Its just the same as when i sent it, just i am a little poorer. ☹

Tested out another speaker. Seems it's definately the amp then...

Hey Guys,
Mika I'm sad to read you had a bad experience with your tech. Sadly this is becoming a moregular occurance and ad a tech myself it really hacks me off that these guys are taking your money and giving you sweet nothing in return. I had to recap a Fender Princeton for a client who took his amp to another CPT tech who stole all his vintage RCA valves, replaced them with cheap Sovtek's told him the amp was fine... The filter caps were the original Astron's... From 1960!
Speaking of caps, first place to start is your power caps, replace all the filter caps for both the power amp and preamp sections, at the same time do the Bias caps and Cathode Bypass caps, preferable with quality caps like Srague Atoms... Not cheap, but will last another 15-20 years.
The low end flab is prob a syptom of dead/dying electrolytics, if the are dimpled they are dead by now.
Cheers
Matt

Big ups and a big high five Matt ?
Time to grow a pair and discharge the amp and pop it out for a look and loads of photos ?
TomCat
@ Mike
If you are not in too much of a hurry and if you are interested I could have a look at the amp during the holiday period and recap for you.
PM me and let me know.
