Thanks singemokey i thought as much (mex being just as good as usa) although i would have thought that there would be a difference in tone from a 50' vintage to a modern mex. but that great. proves you dont have to spend that much to get proper fender. ?
Could just be my ears weren't so good back then - I'd probably spot some small differences now. But in general, they were much of a muchness (except the vintage one was dirtier ? ). I guess in general you'd find better detail work in a limited run, mostly hand built 50's instrument. A lot of it's going to be about averages with quality control. Also, wood, like I said. I didn't know nitro from poly back then either, but I don't think it makes a big difference to the tone, just the feel.
But a Fender guitar is a pretty simple creature, and doesn't use particularly rare woods. So unless you totally skimp, it's going to be easy to reproduce the originals at very reasonable prices - which is why the early MIJ Fenders were considered so good. A little bit of Japanese craftsmanship and quality control lit a fire up Fender USA's ass (is it ok to say ass?).
But these are great guitars. People would have noticed if Stratocasters were a hoax. A lot of people have dissected them and loved them, then hated them, then loved them again.
