One of my best ever holidays was spent in Jeffries a few years ago, and what made it special was a guy named Jono playing at a coffee shop (he played an acoustic through a wah pedal for lead and break bits. Amazing...). We were there every day getting slightly mothered on liquers and Irish coffee instead of on the beach, thanks to Jono. So far the only members who post about where to catch live shows are Keira and Bob. I just know however that there must be hundreds of players like Jono who play in small pubs, coffee shops etc. who are worth supporting - and even more guys like me (who I must confess, sometimes only go to church to watch the band play. I know, I know...), who would love to know about where to go to enjoy some live music. So how about it, who knows a muso playing somewhere thats worth seeing?

there are very few good performing bands i find, in jhb, or SA for that matter, what good bands meaning of a pro standard tend to repeat there set lists for years (months) and thus you get bored fast.
I have been venturing lately to soweto, and downtown to watch afro jazz, explerimental bands, and i have really been blown away by some, blk jks kinda started it all butthere are a handful of amazing jazz improv bands in soweto, greenside, and downtown, jhb.

guess it all depends on what you want to hear , but Mika i disagree strongly that there are few good bands in jhb or the country...wow cos the jhb scene is quite a buzz with original music, and yeah i seen so many new young acts.... playing and composing original music.... again as i started by saying i can't vouch for it being in the style you like....... but if you listen to acoustic music at all jhb has lots to offer some mind blowing players are right here and yeah players who dare to be individual and finding and using their own voice.... again i know nothing of the rock scene in jhb but the acoustic/nu folk and jazz scene is pumping and almost all original compositions.... ( i won't listen to cover bands..... so thats my cut off point ...) even the classical scene is here ....
so yeah chris there are a lot of venues that need the support of everyone to pay their couvert charge and support the local musicians doing their original music........... cos the more people who will actually pay the couvert ..the better the bands do.... but yeah couvert charge is a taboo word to most people .... so yeah guys and girls support the local artists... we need bums on seats at shows .... and yeah there is immense and diverse talent in jhb.... support it please....

fair enough in the rock/alternative scene there is nothing really new sadly, a few hopefuls I could say. and who knows maybe they are working on something mindblowing. The acoustic scene, well i have zero experience there, I saw some acoustic spoken word awhile back it was interesting, proabaly not a fair take on the scene. But the real stuff is happening in soweto
