fair enough, but priority rules. Either way we almost let this topic die, kudos for the reigntion

I believed guitar > sound wrt tone for many years. So it's just one of those things that you learn as you go on man.. Don't lose any sleep about it..
aja
So it comes down to -
Do you want to play live using crappy PA's? get multieffects. And get a backup.
Do you want to record? Or are you a tone obsessed hobbyist? Get stomps. And a pen and paper to save your settings the analog way.
Agreed? or?...
MikeM
I still believe that SOME tones are worth buying pedals for.. I.e my beloved Blackouts Musket. But the 808 modeller on my gt10 sounds pretty good ?
But yes I agree with that conclusion Aja, although I plan to use a tube amp to power my multi effects, I just can't afford to carry around a chorus, flanger, a couple of ODs, reverb, delay, trem, eq and swap between them quick enough ?

You see that is another issue - the portability. Everyone gets a laptop because after dragging their desktop about it becomes apparent that the weight saving is more beneficial than the performance. So the multieffects are a great way to get portable. Pedalboards seem to bloat up very quickly into a 20kg suitcase sized thing that fills a car seat...
MIKA-the-better-one
I personally play guitar for the sound not the ease of transport, us musicians get very lazy i think. If most of the top pro internationjal musos use singles it works for me.

That seems to be changing though. People are more content with a 2x12 combo than a 4x12 stack. Well from what I have seen anyway... As alan has mentioned, even software has gotten to the point that it can replace multieffects, and have even more configuration options...

nope disagreed... get what you want, but don't diss another's choice because of your opinion on who uses what.

Lazy? Fine dude,
YOU carry all my gear. I even bought one of those trolleys to carry it with.... maybe I should post a pic ?
MikeM
Yea stacks are silly. We know that many pro's mic up to a smaller setup.
They also have roadies and get paid to make music. I don't. What's good enough for Jensen Button is good enough for me, but probably not necessary.

Maybe we should all look at that?

Well I don't have an opinion yet, still trying to make up my mind here. Sorry if I offended you.

I'm keeping it very light with Line 6 pocket pod. Just dont know what to do with the cables. ?

I think it's just narrow minded to swear by one and only...
@MIKA I am a fan of analog pedals too, but I have a basic setup of 3, so for me a multi is a waste... and I might add a delay in the future.. and then I'm done... But surely you can see the benefits of a Multi???
Now I want to so badly get the sound in Bigger than my Body.
So I'm going to ask you to tell me which analog pedals could make the following sound for me...
Arpeggiator Sequence , E Harmonic Minor, Ascending 5ths & 4ths and Pentatonic Up & Down.. all at once please
Advise on which pedals I need to do this please... :-\
I thought so...
//EDIT Oh I forgot the budget is $400, The Roger Linn Adrenalinn III does it and that the price...

That's a good point. It is not necessary to get some generic sounding effects pedals if you could rather buy a multi that does it all. However, if there is a specific sound you want there is no harm in buying the pedal itself.

Guys there is no dissing here, this is simply a debate, and if everyone takes a neatral stand then we get no actual progress or stimulation, thus no hard feelings from all this, but I am gonna have to reinforce this forums status as a forum.
"Arpeggiator Sequence , E Harmonic Minor, Ascending 5ths & 4ths and Pentatonic Up & Down.. all at once please"
Any guitarist who wants this I really think he must go find something new to do, cuz he obviously cant play, now I also assume that you were exagerating this example thus this is by no way an attack on yourself.
Guys if jonny greenwood, omar rodriguez lopez, josh homme etc etc use singles as well as countless other pro international musos its kinda a standard (rackmount is another story) but based on multis, they are not yet anywhere near a pro standard, especially here in south africa where proffesionalism in music industry still demands ALOT (it is growing) but demands alot. I saw quite a prominant band play a while back and the guitarist seemed to justify using a ZOOM, whc hsubsequently made me want to eat my ears off. It seems many (not all) musos are more concerned with "oh I cant afford that so ile go the easy root" yet can still get pissed at a show and buy 2000 beers. PRIORITIES, if you want it enough you can get it, example blk jks a local SOWETO band, went to the US with no money but managed to get gibson guitars marshall amps and a whole host of sigle pedals, why BECAUSE they are of industry standard, and multis are not yet of theat standard (you can justify that they are versitile) but I would rather one good sound than 20 ok ones. Priorities if you can get better sounds then do it.
This is not condemnation of all who use multis, I used to own one, and it was great it really got me into actually usng effects, but there is no dogging the fact that there is a better sound from actual pedals. Multis may well soon be a better option but not yet, they also may be fine to use on stage at this point if you are happy with that sound (uncommon to most). But its a logical step to upgrade to singles. If you dont want to carry a bit more awkward equipment to a show for that sound then you obviously dont care to much.
Its fine to use that compact multi set up, but so far it cannot be justified to be of better or a]on par with proper analogue quality.
EXCUSE THE ESSAY

I saw a post or 2 in this thread mentioning a couple of pro guitarists who do use MFX units and software. What is your opinion with regard to that? (just curious)

No actually it's JOHN MAYER... :?
Here is the actual sound of the exaggerated example...
Who I actually do believe can play guitar...
MIKA-the-better-one
you know yeh you do get some guys using them, I think the guitarist from static x uses a zoom even. Its even claimed that john meyer has used one. idno if this is true, but yeh there are whaty you call pioneers I guesse, maybe in truth it comes down to who and what music you like, maybe i have taken such a hard stance on this because all the music i like is focused around singles. never the less you cant deny the sound.
hopefully jimmy hendrix and kurt cobain and all the other muso dudes in guitar heaven will forgive john meyer and all the other guilty pro guys for using such things....... I guesse we all make mistakes, they probably just need some support in such tough times. lol
MIKA-the-better-one
as i said john meyer has gone thru some tough times. hahaha. was it the actual background riff that he is arpegiating up a step down two harmonic fourths, and then two steps to the left, or the solo?

Kurt Cobain never had an ounce of tone in his body ?
You just arguing your view and not listening what other people say!
MIKA-the-better-one
No kurt only knew how to write songs, good ones, while most guys these days ask for ridiculous delay repeats so they can write a very boring pretensious (spelling?) songs. You didnt answer my question as to where his magical arpeggio thingy happens???
As mentioned this is a debate on a forum, whereby we can discuss views, I am not gonna just woosy foot about and be switzerland, I have to say it like i see it.
