I would imagine that TV producers, advertising agencies and so on would buy audio material from an audio library rather than commission someone to specifically compose for say, a wildlife documentary or a TV advert? Is there such an industry locally? Is it possible to at least have a hobby pay for itself this way?
Composing music for TV can be profitable if you know the right people to get in. I know a couple of guys making music for TV that are doing OK.
Otherwise, they use royalty-free audio sample CDs for alot of that sort of stuff. Sound effects, short snippets of music, voices etc.
www.sampledivision.co.za sell those sorts of discs and plenty of other audio software packages like Stylus RMX and Trilogy Bass.
