So, my dad found a Bass guitar, Ibanez SDGR.. It's a 6 string bass, in good condition, for R795.. Worth it?
It's at a pawn shop, so i told him to buy it.. I hope i didn't make a mistake. I'm not a bassist by any means, so i have no idea what it is worth.
Any ideas?

If he hits an open low E string.... and then plays the same string on FRET 12.
If the pitches are the same...
I'd say it was worth the buy.

Haha, if my dad could do that, I would be stoked.. But unfortunately, he would have no clue as to whether they sound the same or not.. i will test it out when i get it, take some pics, and see what you guys think..

I will get it from him tomorrow probably.. :/ Is there any way to find out what model it is? He says it doesn't say so on the bass itself? Does it say elsewhere?

It's a good buy regardless, but there have been hundreds of Soundgear models over the years. Have a look for a small sticker on the back of the headstock. Otherwise you may have to post pics to an Ibanez user's forum and find an expert in Ibbys.

Hey Guitarboy, I just bought an Ibanez SR1005 GR (Prestige Series, and comes in a Prestige HC) about 2 weeks ago, exactly the same one as used by Peter Iwers of "In Flames". It's a 5 string, and has just been discontinued, so I got it at a really good price (no, will not say how much)..........see the one below......THAT'S IT......... a real beauty!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, just noticed my one is the 5 String Ibanez SR1005EFM, (SR Series) like the one in the pic I posted. Not too sure what the diffs is with the 6 String SD series are. Apologies.
I've only had a look at it in the shop, and once for about 10 minutes at home.......hahahahaha......

Yeah, Aubs.. Take that, add a string.. and that's the monster I got! ? haha.. ALTHOUGH, it doesn't work. Not quite sure why.
I plug it in, and sometimes there is a very low signal, i turn the volume of my amp up and it disappears.. I changed the battery, and nothing.. So I duno... But my dad is a technician, so he'll take a look at it! ?

Geez, that's a bummer. I played with my one in the store through a Hartke VX3500 Combo, (which I bought with it), and it sounded fantastic. Maybe go to the Ibanez Bass forum, and see what the problems are guys have encountered, there may be an answer. I am not a technical person, so can't even steer you in any direction.
I'm almost positive Alan will also give you guidelines on what to check. Hope it pans out ok man.

Even not working, I reckon at R800 it's a good buy. Hell, I'd take it off you for more than that, even if all the pickups and electronics had to be replaced. ? I love through neck basses and I love fixer-uppers.
Your dad should be able to track it down (possibly better than I could). It's usually just a worn out jack socket (so the battery's negative is not being switched to earth - those damn Asian barrel jacks) or a connector needing reseating.
guitarboy2828
Yeah, my dad will be able to trace it! ? When he got it, he didn't bother trying it out as he didn't have an amp and just assumed it would work..
But he'll use his oscilloscope to track the sound.. ?
Will let ya know when i know what is potting! ?

So, just an update. 3 caps were leaking, so my dad replaced those. But seems as though the main IC is broken. Signal coming in, but nothing coming out. Anyone know where I can find info on the IC to see if there is an equivalent or where I can get another one?
The model is JRC 1008D.. My dad has never heard of one of those, but then again, he doesn't work on guitars usually.
Also, It isn't a neck through bass Alan. So, It isn't a prestige. So back to guessing what this bass is. Will post pics when i finally get it. ?
AlanRatcliffe
It'll be an op-amp IC.
EDIT: Just did a search and came up with the LT1008, which is a precision op-amp with LM108A and LM308A listed as equivalents. JRC are just a manufacturer.
guitarboy2828
So, because the bass is broken, the guy my dad brought it from reduced the price to R600.. ?
HOWEVER, cant seem to find the IC anywhere. One company said they can get it from England, but wasn't to sure if they could order only one.
Any ideas where I could try find one in SA Alan?
AlanRatcliffe
Try an LM308 - that's the classic IC used in the Rat pedal and others. I saw the TL071 mentioned as close enough to use too. You could put in a socket and just try a bunch of different opamps - most are interchangeable.
But I'm not an electronics guy. Maybe speak to Matta - he's very clued up on that side of things as a lot of pedals use obsolete ICs.

Thanks Alan, your wisdom is always appreciated! ?
AlanRatcliffe
More semi-educated guesswork than wisdom in this case, I'm afraid.
