What are you reading these days? (printed matter only)

arjunmenon · 2009-10-22T09:15:37+00:00

I know we've discussed what everybody is listening etc etc, but i'd like a sneak peek into what everyone is reading these days. This week,I'm on : 1. A lion's legacy - RJ Patterson (very nice book about lion conservation in northern kenya) 2. A player's guide to chords & harmony - Jim Aikin 3. Guitar Player (Al DiMeola on the cover) 4. Creative recording Vol.1 Effects & processors (Can't remember the author's name and slightly outdated book, but still a good read because it details various effects).

My overwhelming feeling reading it was that he was advancing it as a plausible explanation. I think he listens to that stuff and all he hears are the licks he borrowed from his heroes.

dee wrote I am keen on starting the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series though.

Master works. Just not always fun. The author's consistently sadistic treatment of his characters gets a little wearing at times.

Even so: Dances with Dragons! Finally!!!

"Slayer's Reign In Blood" by D.X. Ferris. Short, fairly interesting read about the making of the album and the personalities involved.

LUCI in the sky, a spy thriller. Got myslf a copy of Killing Keblle, need to start that.

Bob-Dubery

Ben Goldacre: "Bad Science"

Just finished "The Power Brokers" by Alan Henry (which is about F1 motor racing, not sinister shadowy figures manipulating the global economy.)

Well, I've only just read the preface and first few paragraphs of the intro, but I purchased a download of Rory Block's autobiography - When a Woman Gets the Blues. I'm really not that keen on autobios but this person seems to have followed a path that interests me and so I got it. And so far I'm enjoying.

The Wheel of time series again in time for the final installment in January, that some random parenting book and the Bible.

Busy with the second freakonomics book

Bonfire of the vanities - Tom Wolfe

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand and I'm struggling through it. I'm very bad in that I can't stop with a book half way through. Somehow I feel that I have to finish the book otherwise the investment of time that I've put into the first half will have been wasted. So I end up struggling through the book and waste more time finishing it. Can someone please break into my house and steal this book so I have an excuse for not finishing it.

Look on the bright side: At least it's not Atlas Shrugged.

Just William - Richmal Crompton

Currently reading "A Canticle For Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller, Jr. Loves me some post-apocalyptic sci-fi, yo.

As someone who has read both I fully agree. If it makes Rand's pro-Laissez-faire Capitalism diatribes any more bearable, take pleasure in knowing that Ayn Rand herself was forced to go on Social Security and Medicare in the last years of her life.

Elephanta Suite - Paul Theroux

Man, I used to love the William books as a kid!

Reading War of the Worlds now; it's been on my "to-read" list for a while.

I used to read War of the Worlds as a kid, but now that I've grown up I read Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky ?

I try to not do schadenfreude. I was thinking more of that looooooooong monologue in Atlas Shrugged. It's not as if the book would be short and pithy without it either.

Pssssh! Tolstoy ?
That wasn't meant to be any kind of "but look what I read NOW!" kind of thing (hardly an impressive read) - I just happen to be reading it now.

Don't worry, I knew exactly what you meant. I just thought it was funny how your post could be interpreted in two very different ways - so I chose to interpret it in the funnier of the two ?

Oh, and I'm still going to have to grow up some more centuries before I will enjoy Tolstoy ?

Psean

Hehe, No problem man. I had a laugh when I saw it too. I think there should be a principle along the lines of "the best interpretation or explanation is always the funniest interpretation". It could be called Deefstes' Razor or something like that.

The William books kept me busy on many rainy days as a child.

I was surfing the net for free electronic books for the Kindle and was surprised to see Richmal Crompton books available for free download.

Saying that there are huge volumes of the classics all for free download for Kindle....
