who love guitars and actually getting one for a specific job is not a criteria.... i find they diversify more..... and i have found that pro muso's tend to own less instruments that most hobbyists heheh me thinks it has something to do with budget and yeah we often debate how hobbyists own many custom guitars and how many top end instruments are not even aimed at the pro muso market but at the hobbyists.......
TJs is a perfect example. All those amateur hacks get up there with their limited edition Martins, their custom-order Larrivees, their Morgans, their Smoothtalkers... Every time an actual working musician shows up they're playing either something that's been battered beyond recognition or a Takamine.
I think there is a valid reason for that...
The amateur hacks don't travel, so can afford to take out those prized guitars once in a while! We have the luxury to NOT have working guitars... an example to consider.
Tommy Emmanuel tours with 3 guitars, and those 3 only, 2 beat up Matons and a fine looking Maton. Now I have heard people say, “You see only needs 3 old beat up guitars”
No… wrong… I have seen many a DVD and Documentary on Tommy Emmanuel and you must see the guitars he has at home, LOTS!!! Custom Larrivees, Custom Taylors, Custom Matons, Martins the works… with the most insane inlays on his Matons... Same with many other musicians who leave there babies at home and take the wokers to work...
John Mayer is the same, have you seen his Martin Collection? Why does he play with the same few on stage? The ‘normal’ ones? Why does he not take his collection of D-45s on stage or on tour? Not ever?
I wouldn't want to travel with my Larrivee either if I was a working musician... I would get a Takamine, like Monte Mongomery, and beat the hell out of it.. and then go home and enjoy my Larrivees’.
Luckily I don't so I can go all out and get what I love, aesthetically and sonically, and know it's always safe ?
