We have an Opel Meriva, which fit's a helluva lot in with the back seats flat and is still small enough to be economical for daily use. We've always gone for hatchbacks because of the gear requirements. When I met my wife I was a drummer, I had a big kit (no jokes please!) and she had a 1600 Golf - match made in heaven.

I don't drive (some are born to drive, some are born to be driven ?). Strangely enough I was quite successful working for a motor spares company for three years.

I can ride a bike, but emergency room staff call them "donorcycles" for a reason. The idea of carting a guitar around on a bike gives me the willies. The simple fact of the matter is it doesn't matter how good a rider you are it's the idiot in the car you have to watch out for.

Yeah, you have to be very, very careful. If you're the type that drives fast all the time or are an impatient driver, it's not a good idea to get a bike.

lol..Nice one Alan.. ?

About the transport thing, not having credit history, finance or much money, as a last resort i bought a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a very good friend for 55k. Its got 275000 on the clock and a missing prop shaft (i.e. its a 2x4 now) and the front discs and pads need to be sorted out (end of month project ☹ ) And it also drinks like a bitch...but the driving pleasure ranks right up there and you could fit quite a lot of stuff in the back..and then some with the back seats down ? Well, thats my tale of misery...

Ya I badly want a bike but you won't see me trying to carry my axe on one. Screw that idea.

We were in a car accident in February which turned me into a Carlos (pora without a car) for the past few months. Insurance is paying out today, at long last.

We'll probably get a Tazz again. You can fit a LOT in there, it's comfortable, looks good and is pretty damn economical. Best of all, you can pick up an old model in decent nick for R25k ;D

NorioDS

Oh and my boet will service it for the cost of the parts plus R100 ;D ;D ;D

I can't think of anything that would make me have enough brain-fade to attempt that!
Good luck finding another Tazz. Shouldn't be too hard - there's so many of them!

Arjun, does the Cherokee still give decent performance with only front-wheel drive?

Hey M,

Its not bad. I get 11 litres for a 100 kms in the present condition the Jeep is in. But it could be better if i get the prop shaft sorted and drop the 4WD gear to neutral (its stuck in 4 all time at the moment). This has made the car a bit unstable and it feels like the damn thing is floating and not sitting on the road properly. However, the 'joi de vivre' happens when i push the thing to 220 kmph on the way to Paarl and the thing purrs!

Cheers

Mr-M

You're a brave man! Is it the V8 model?

JoeyBones

My scooby doesn't get much better mileage that that and it's a 2l.

arjunmenon

Hey M,

Its a 4 litre, 6 in-line engine. An a very sweet sounding engine at that... ?
