Who's interested in a GFSA Joburg setup workshop?

Hi all, following up on the Joburg gettogether (or however you spell that) I am looking for a bunch of names of people interested in a workshop on setups and small jobs on the guitar. I will post a preliminary programme below; please comment if you would like to see a change to this list (or have some other smartass remark ? ). After we get sorta enough names together we are going to look for a 'teacher', some victim guitars and a venue so don't hold your breath just yet. Should we run out of time on the evening itself we will obviously organise another one to finish up so don't say this is an ambitious list: Acoustic and electric setup: how does a string vibrate? truss rods bridge action and neck angle nut action Electric setup: intonation string radius pickup height Guitar care and upgrading: tuners tremolo bridges installing acoustic pickups changing electric pickups

Which means I will start looking for the other stuff. Please do not stop posting if you're in so we can get about two dozen interested people. This would yield roughly one dozen on the night itself, which is a size I think is reasonable.

Me and Nita are definitely 110% interested. It would all just depend on date/time and if I still have a job at that time (Wish I could say that was a joke :-\ ).

Another topic that may be of interest, and which could be accomodated in this session, would be routine care. What can you do to keep your guitar running better for longer?

EG humidifying of acoustic guitars in the dry highveld winter. I would like to clean my guitars when changing strings - but what should I touch and not touch, what should I use etc etc.

I have not done what I should have, which is call a potential speaker (busy @ work). I will MAKE time tomorrow.

Not everyone have sent me PM on what is wrong with the guitar they are going to bring. This makes it hard to make sure we have all the patients we need to demo/practice the operations on. We can have the event without that assurance but some might get disappointed.

I am herewith also asking all Joburg forum members and non-member participants to come up with suggestions as to the venue. Not having any local knowledge I need you guys. PM me any contact details you might have and I'll see what we can come up with.

The tricky thing here is that if the fairly inexperienced among us don't know enough about setups and the like they're not going to be able to tell you what is wrong. Myself, I think my guitar is set up perfectly and, not out of personal preference (which is a different thing), it may very well be set up incorrectly.

So this being said, I can bring it along but wouldn't be able to say what is in fact wrong with it's setup. It may be right and then it'll just be an example of a twin post trem.

I'm looking at basic setup issues such as bridge height, Nut Height, neck truss rod adjustments etc.
I know how to check/set intonation etc but that could also be covered.

I suggest we keep it electric guitars only. Floyd rose bridges are up to you really- i dont have one so i am cool

Nope - too many acoustic and 'both' players there.

Short of guitars though if everyone thinks they should leave theirs at home since they're all sorted ☹

I agree...Keep it to both electrics and acoustics....a lot will be interested in both.

Noooo no no no. I'll definitely bring a guitar if it will help the cause?

I got:
Yamaha Pacifica 012 with strat style trem (Been setup by a pro though)
Cort MR-710F acoustic (Also been tweaked by a pro though on day of purchase)
Squier Tele Custom with strat style fixed bridge (This one hasn't seen setup hands though so would be my first choice)

I can also check with Nita if she maybe wants to take her Cort X-4 electric, also has a strat style trem with dual buckers. Never seen setup hands.

Update: we have found someone willing and able to do the teaching: none less than Andy McGibbon 8)
As soon as I get back to SA I will go meet with him to discuss the setup (of the evening, not the guitars); meanwhile you guys still need to help with finding a venue. And sign up ?
