BMU
Good morning. Been lurking for a while, it's probably time to jump in so here goes.
I've been playing since my teens for around 20 years now. Yes, I know that more or less gives my age away, and it's pretty darn scary. I'M TOO YOUNG TO BE OLD ALREADY! But I'm too old to still SUCK this much at guitar LOL! Strictly a hobbyist bedroom shredder wannabe. I think one of the first things I tried after getting an electric was Kirk Hammit's solo from Damage Inc...not a good place to start!
The first really decent guitar I had was a '90 Ibanez Universe (black and neon green, 7-string as all Universes are), bought that 2nd hand in 1995 I think. I also had the Stephen Carpenter LTD seven string (SC-607B). "Had" because those two were stolen a few months ago...yeah sad story but at least insurance replaced them. So now I have a brand new (2007) Universe which is the yummiest guitar I've ever played. I also have an RG1527 Prestige 7-string and currently looking at acquiring one more, hopefully another 7, hopefully with a fixed bridge to take the LTD's place. Also a Fender Jazz Bass Special (Japanese made, 1984 I think) which I use just to lay down bass tracks. (I have Warwick GAS at the moment but that's another story.)
My "rig" is a laptop, a POD XT and Cubase. Oh yes also have a pretty cool old Mesa Boogie .22 Caliber which serves as a TV couch practice amp and/or coffee table.
Influences are a completely unoriginal list of shredders and metallers, nothing to see here sorry. ? Vai, Petrucci, In Flames (for their songwriting & riffing), At The Gates (riff meisters), Bodom...etc. I pretty much only care about playing metal. Being an amateur I don't have to be versatile! That said I'm really in it for the music only and not the whole rebel/satan b*s that accompanies it.
It's good to find a site where SA guitarists can kick back and give each other GAS. ?
By the way, this site put Guthrie Govan on my radar, never heard of him previously. I got Erotic Cakes a few weeks ago in the mail, his playing and originality are out of this world.
Ok, that's me.

Hey man, welcome. Sorry to hear about your stolen gear, but your new gear is awesome. I've been GASing for a 7 for ages. And yes, Guthrie is king. Post pics and clips! ?

Welcome!
What gives with a 7-string guitar. Is it a really low 7th string or a really high 1st?
TomCat
Hey welcome to the forum....I'll be sticking with my six strings for quite a while yet....nowhere close to even mastering those yet.... ? ?

a string below your low E (6th) string. So tuning will be B E A D G B E.

Hi, yep like Lethe said it's a low B, below low E. Nice an' thick an' growly. Very metal. ?
Unearth and Dave Weiner... heard the names but there's so much out there, I don't think I've checked them out. Thanks. Always looking for good new stuff.

Nice guitars BMU! And if you don't know them already, Nevermore is the definitive 7-string metal band alongside Meshuggah, wicked guitars man!

Hey there BMU - welcome 8)
Do you find that the reversed headstock makes any difference?
My Ibanez has it reversed and I wondered if it really improves low down sustain or what...
AlanRatcliffe
Doesn't make a difference with a locking nut.

Oh didn't notice that! Mine doesn't lock. Oh well.. Thanks!
BMU
Aja: I think reverse headstock is purely for (anti)cosmetic purposes? I can't see it makes any difference at all, vibration stops at the nut doesn't it, even on a non-locking nut like the LTD in the photo I posted. I actually never even thought of this before.
I'm checking out Unearth. First impression is they sound too much like Killswitch Engaged, (not a band I'm crazy about), but the guitaring is better, I'm sure I'll get over it eventually. ?
Willem186: yeah Nevermore are musically excellent, but I find the operatic vocals and melodramatic ballads irritating. Jeff Loomis' solo album is therefore just perfect!
Fave "7-string" bands are Scar Symmetry and Trivium's Shogun album. Per Nilsson from Scar Symmetry is unbelievable, a genius in my book.
