Hi Guys....thought I should start a thread on Gibson guitars. I discovered that many on this forum just love them while others simply love to hate 'em (especially the Les Paul lines) And one finds this on a worldwide scale.
I simply love Gibson guitars and especially Les Pauls. Why?.....Tone, action and playability. Some USA players refer to all these as the "Les Paul Mojo".
Any downsides ?...perhaps the weight and price ?
Value for money?...yes perhaps, if one considers re-sale value after say 5 years or so.
Just my few cents...
And how about SG's and ES175's and 335's....??

There was quite a "heated debate" on Gibson a few weeks ago.......perhaps you wanna go see that first, then perhaps decide if it is "safe" to go there again!!! ? ? ?
However, the points you wanna discuss may be a little bit different..........but I can just imagine where it's gonna end up!!!! :?

They have my respect for giving us the Explorer and Flying V, but other than that they're not for me. It seems that they're heads have become too big and they can get away with anything. Anybody checked out the Zoot SG...I mean WTF?

A Les Paul? Playability, did you say? Ay caramba.
I've also never heard a Les Paul sound any good clean. But maybe that's just me.

Sadly I've become a single coily man. Not a big LP guy anymore although I'm gassing for a special.

Amazing...when Les Pauls in the early years were intended to be played clean ?

Personally I think Les Pauls are awesome guitars...even though Strats are my favorites.
Huge fat tone, sustain forever, the short scale is comfortable, and the design is a masterpiece.
Besides a Strat what guitar has the perfect look of a Les Paul.
And the tone...from heaven. ?

I F$%#%^# hate them >☹
?
Stratisfear I will send you a mp3 of Peter Green playing a LP clean which will change your mind ? I think the reason we have so few examples of clean LP's is that they sound so damn good when they are Driving a valve amp. Then again how many examples of clean guitar tone does one hear these days anyway?
I have to say my favourite guitar tones were all done on Gibsons: AC/DC, Free, Guns n Roses, Mike Bloomfield, Original Fleetwood mac, Early Clapton, Joe Walsh in his James gang days, Jimi Page, Early ZZ Top, Gary Moore etc. etc.
The V sounds really good

I absolutely like the tone of a nice distorded LP...for me, that's the ultimate rock and roll sound. That animal like grunt... But clean isn't all that bad either.
And I don't have one. And I want one...
But, I also like the Strat single coil sound. Also the ultimate rock and roll sound.... That bell like tones, as it's always described.
And I also don't have one, and I want one...
For now, my Godin is a nice compromise between the two.

Tone wise i have no problem with a LP , actually i love the sound , but the weight and there bloody necks put me off . maybe it's time to acquire one and try again .......

Love the LP and especially the ES-335, love the sound and the warmth of an ES-335 so so much.
My problem with Gibson is the price...
That said, I will probably get an ES 335 when I visit the USA and get to play a few, provided I can find a decent one ?
Unless i can build my own of course... ?

a les paul is one of the most beautiful looking shapes to me, i have played a few but i also don't really like the necks on them and find it a little awkward, but i am not used to it and i can bet that i'll get it with just a few hours of practice. i would love to add one to my collection and will be looking at doing that at the end of the year(if i can get a 80's silverburst). i just simply have to have one cause a collection of guitars are worthless unles you have a gibson lp.
i don't know if this is just on the new Gibsons but a source has pointed out to me that the fret board wood on a LP is shockingly dry and it doesn't take the fretboard oil nicely, he's setup a few newish gibsons and found it to be the same on all of them.............
otherwise they are awsome...... BTW, has anyone ever compared the tone of the chambered gibsons to the non chambered and compared tone before?

The finish just looks like it ran ??? but relics are starting to grow on me ?

Alan the Bloomfield and Pearly gates signature guitars really do it for me. The VOS models can actually be had for a more or less decent price. That's a nice one you posted!

I guess I'm spoilt or blessed depending on your perspective, having an example of each protagonist in this classic "vs." argument. I gel quite happily with both scale lengths and love each one for it's particular characteristics. I find I reach for the LP most of the time, but then again I'm still getting the Strat to a "sweet spot". Having played an ES (and loved it) I'd happily add one to the stable. Until I'm that flush with cash, the Sheraton I'm modding will have to suffice. With regard to sound, I believe that the amp & effects do hugely influence the way we perceive it. I borrowed a friend's Marshall AVT150H & 4x12 while my DSL401 (all valve) was down for maintenance. Same guitar, same effects, same settings - couldn't wait to get my amp back, and several people who aren't musicians let alone guitarists asked why my guitar "wasn't sounding as nice as last week", etc.
As much as I love the classic Les Paul sound & feel I'm completely with Explorerlover regarding the company's attitude. And like Reinhard I hate Gibson - for their prices. They seem to have forgotten that there are other guitars out there that'll do the same job for less money OR are better made for equal money. That said, icons are icons for reasons that transcend marketing blurb. That stands for the Strat, the Les Paul and the Tele in equal measure. I have mods planned for both my Les and my Strat, and I'd love to get another Tele again sometime. There are other guitars that are better than all of them, but that is largely irrelevant to us players because they're not the originals that created the tones we love in the hands of the men & women we admire.
No guitar will ever win this argument because tone is such a personal thing - one man's meat etc. It's the classic pub discussion; Jap bike vs Harley, Blue Bulls vs Sharks - choose your hobby. We're best off loving what we gel with and accepting the merits of the other instruments. Just because we don't like them doesn't mean they're not great at what they do.

Now a Pearly Gates I would search the end of the world for..
