My budget is R4000 and need a new guitar. The guitar i got now is one of those R1000 no name brands.

I'm looking into getting the Ibanez(AX series(axS42) or an Epiphone in the same price value.

Any suggestions. I'm going to buy the guitar from Marshall in woodmeed.

I'm also going to add the Jackson JS20 into my selection. Don't know which guitar to buy.
Forget the Jackson - those droopy headstocks never work properly without a Floyd with a locking nut.

Epiphone, you know what you are getting. Not quite a Gibson, but that's often an advantage IMO. Also look at ESP and Schecter - they have some guitars in that price range and quality seems good from what I have seen.

The Ibanez looks nice - a bit like an SG, a bit like a PRS Mira. I might hate it if I pick it up though as Ibanez often tend to skinnier necks when they're "rockier" designs. One to try though.

Speaking of PRS - their LTD range (which are more than you want to spend) are not worth it, so don't be tempted by the name if you see them - you can get a lot more guitar for your money than that.

BTW. There's an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Sunburst "Plus" top selling s/h for R3 500 here on Cape Town Gumtree. http://www.gumtree.co.za/capetown/68/22664068.html - Shipping via Speed Services would be under R400 and R35 for extra insurance.

I could waffle on (as everyone knows ;D ), but I'll post this now as the power is going down in a few minutes.
I suggest you shop around. You can get good deals at Music Connection and TOMS as well, Checkout Music Connections consignment stock and TOMS bargain basement. Gumtree and the Junkmail are good places to check as well. There have been a few really good deals on there.
I'll recommend an Epiphone Les Paul. They're pretty versatile and good value.
I bought one as my first guitar and I still have it 3 years later and its going strong.
+1 the Schecter guitars i've seen also look like pretty good value.

Remember, NEVER pay full retail price in a music store!!

Ever since i played an '87 Epiphone SG, i've loved those guitars. So shop around and you might be sweetly surprised ?
You might want to checkout the Gretsch Electromatic series. I've heard one on a planetshakers recording and it sounded pretty good. They come in some really cool finishes as well. Check ebay.com
sorry this is late, been very busy. I'm going to go for the Epiphone Les Paul Studio.
going to get it next week.

Good choice, the lp studio is a nice solid body and very versatile for blues metal etc.

Would suggest that u save some money after buying it and get the stock pickups replaced. The pickups u choose will probably depend on what style music u play.

Look at seymour duncans (invader) and emg`s (81, 89).....or the tone zone`s
