What tune in your playlist/radio are you listening to currently? I'm digging Danzig so far.

I think it's something to do with sideburns and having a drink with Singemonkey
You can't trust a damn thing he says about the Stones. Apparently Sister Morphine is a terrible song "except for this part, and this part, and this part and this part"... ?

I didn't say it was a terrible song. I said it's the song on the record I consistently skip. Droning and maudlin.

Burnt ice by megadeth. Also love singing it. Very awesome and scary song.

I'm cautiously optimistic based on the single... but I have a soft spot for Mr Reed.

Hammeron

Deep Purple 'Made in Japan" 1972, good God these guys were on fire! I have yet to experience a live recording that remotely comes close, everything gells, everything fits, everyone on the top of their game. Blackmore's Strat and Lord's Hammond in perfect Hard Rock antagonistic synchronicity! Brilliant!

I found the wake up the dead concert of megadeths very good. sounds even better than the studio recordings.

P J Harvey. To Bring You My Love

I tend to buy CDs in batches.

The batch that arrived today includes

Robert Plant - Mighty Rearranger
Nick Lowe - Jesus of Cool
Ry Cooder - Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down

There's more, but I haven't had time to play them yet.

I'm working backwards through Plant's solo career. I like Mighty Rearranger a lot. He's grown up well. All that yelping and preening would be a bit ridiculous these days, so he retains a big punch (a very "Zep-esque" punch at times) but eschews the histrionics. This is the way for rock gods to grow up. Led Zeppelin were an eclectic band with a wider range than they're sometimes given credit for. Plant's never been bashful about his influences and maintains the eclecticism here, with nods to various world musics and especially to arabic and north African sounds (Plant is a big Tinariwen fan, and guitarist Justin Adams has worked with Mali's finest as producer and occasional guest player).

Lowe.... well it just goes to show how influential he was on mid-to-latter 70s British pop. You can hear the seeds of the early Elvis Costello records here for example. At one point in the 2nd series of Costello's "Spectacle" series he exclaims "Nick Lowe! England's greatest songwriter!". Well there's no doubt that Nick can craft smart pop songs with infectious hooks.

The economic downturn and shenanigans in the banking sector seem to have provided songwriting fuel for some folks. Loudon Wainwright got a whole album out of it, and now it's Cooder's turn. He channels the spirit of dustbowl troubadors such as Woody Guthrie, but everything is stated in his trademark style on the borders of americana and mexicana. It's low on guitar fireworks - which seems to have been the case with Cooder for a while now - but the playing is sharp, and so is his songwriting (unusually nearly everything on the album is his). He does a great imitation of, and pays a tribute to, one of his own musical heroes on "John Lee Hooker for President". Elsewhere he makes the point that as bad as Jesse James may have been, he never turned anybody out of their house. Cooder's pretty pissed off, and he doesn't mind you knowing that.
