Just started listening to some Pete Townshend stuff again. Anthology, which collates his solo stuff and also the series of Scoops albums (including many Who demos, outtakes, etc). Blown away anew by how great this guy's writing, performing (and singing) is!
Also just got the new Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album (Mojo) and a Bob Dylan Christmas album ( ?) - haven't put either on yet, but looking forward to it... 8)

All day a song went round in my head. Got home and found it. Romeo's Tune by Steve Forbert (1979/80). Classic stuff ...

Geoff Muldaur Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere
Fab solo, acoustic, fingerstyle blues from a master (and master historian) of the genre.

One of the wicked coolest most relaxing albums. :bopping:

Was (Not Was) Hello Dad... I'm In Jail
Yes I know, not exactly Celtic folk is it?
The high points here are fabulous. Irresistible funky pop - "Listen Like Thieves", "Walk The Dinosaur". A fab remake of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" with excellent rapping. An alternate version of their hit "How The Heart Behaves", slowed down and arranged for two acoustic guitars and harmonica (don't know if it's a demo, it seems a bit too produced for that). The tender "Somewhere In America". The wacky but very clever "I Feel Better Than James Brown".
There is a question raised by this album. Namely, how did anybody get it into their heads to try to have a dance hit with Kim Basinger and Ozzy Osbourne handling the vocals? ("Shake Your Head" went to number 4 in the UK)

Hi folks,
Recently got hold of a few dvds that have put a smile on my face.
1) Robben Ford live in a Paris club circa 2001. Wonderful playing from a true master of the guitar. The man is a fountain of ideas and tasteful and seemingly effortless licks on mostly his Tele (I hear he's playing Gibson's these days....). And we know a Tele takes some taming. Three piece backing band drums and bass and keyboards hold the fort magnificently.
2) Lightning in a bottle. This is the story of the blues recorded live citca 2004 and features a who's who of living legends. Scorcese's (spell check) hand holds the script and camera while drummer Steve Jordan takes care of the musical direction. Unforgettable performances from Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples, Macey Gray (I kid you not!), Keb Mo. A must see.
3)Suzanne Vega. Recorded live at Montreaux, this album features the talented songwriter go about her work along with a very talented backline. If you play the bass, check out this bassist's ear for melody and composition. In fact the band kinda forms around him. Great minimalist musicianship from a three piece that sounds BIG enough for five.

Philip Sayce. Played with Jeff Healey etc. I was expecting a bit more than generic rock, oh well. Also got Black Crowes Croweology though. MAGNIFICENT.

Tom Verlaine Songs And Other Things. I've had this on the go in the car since the weekend and it's sticking. He's in great form on this disc. Very strong playing and songwriting. The vocals are down just a tad in the mix, which makes for an interesting tease. Unusual guitar sounds and treatments. This is an intriguing and rewarding set.

My latest favourite album of the moment: Gordian Knot - Emergent.
Ex Cynic bassist and a host of guest talent so you know it's going to be good. More jazzy than metal. Just amazingly composed and executed.

Bob Dylan's Infidels. Produced by Mark Knopfler, who also plays some tasty licks on some tracks. Late period tour de force IMO.
