Well now, yesterday I got my Skin it Back (Little Feat) DVD. So, not listening rather watching and listening. The sound is not so good and I dont know but I dont think it was intended for publication hey but it is wonderful. And you realize that this just has to be about the best band that's ever been.
Is that with Lowell George in the line up? Little Feat were never the same without him IMO.
I can heartily recommend the live album
Waiting For Columbus, for my money one of the best live albums there is and it certainly shows just how potent Little Feat were as a live act.

Martin Simpson - True Stories.
The latest disc from one of the finest finger style (and slide!) players around. Full of Simpson's trademark finger style work and sometimes impossibly sweet tone.

Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew
Not really a guitar album, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to commend it. In fact many of the songs seem to be guitar based (Hannigan handles most of the guitar duties herself).
She describes her music as "plinky plonk". I think it's idiosyncratic and probably naive (as in "naive art") but not twee. I think there's a nod somewhere in all of this to Vashti Bunyan, but Hannigan has got her act rather more together and delivers a more substantial music. She's an interesting singer and there's some very effective vocal arrangements. Also good use of trumpet in her band, but trumpet singluar, not a brass section.

Listening to some new tracks from Hell Yeah, new Sevendust album is also spinning on and off - some cool guitaring on there. Picked up some oldish Anthrax albums the other day aswell (Volume 8 and Stomp442) - theres some wicked ass six stringing on those courtesy of Dimebag 8) Also cant seem to get the new Slash album out of my car radio for some reason - maybe cos it kicks ass too much ?

Greg Howe's Crack it way open off of Extraction. Prior to that, Full view by Howe & Kotzen

Heaven Is Whenever, the new album by The Hold Steady - typically great album from "the best bar band in the world"
Recent additions also include the new Futureheads (great spiky indie in the same vein as their debut), Surfer Blood and The Drums, two of a new wave of Beach Boys loving guitar bands from the States and Bob Mould's latest album.

I have had it for a while but been listening to Derk Trucks Band 'Already Free' in the car these past few days. The singing is just fantastic! Also got the Jerry douglas 'Glide' out just for the vocal on Marriage Made in Hollywood.

Who sings that? Paul Brady?

Norma Waterson - Norma Waterson
I think I'm trying to recapture the magic of seeing her live not so long ago.
This an all star record. The backing includes Norma's husband Martin Carthy, her daugher Eliza Carthy, Danny Thompson and Richard Thompson.
Two things of interest to me
1) Eliza Carthy handles the backing vocals. The match between her and her mother's signing is uncanny. The timbre, the harmonies, the timing. It all clicks perfectly and sounds effortless and natural.
2) Richard Thompson doing backing is very different from Richard Thompson doing his own thing (yet still distinctively Thompson). In particular he channels the ghosts of Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt on the jazzier numbers.

The Hold Steady - Heaven Is Whenever. Okak but not as good as the earlier stuff.
Editors - In This Light And On This Evening. Absolute shite. 2 or 3 decent tracks. The rest are filler.
Band of Horses - Infinte Arms. Not their best effort but its a tad too slow for me.
Florence and The Machine - Lungs. I was late in on the hype. Surprisingly good. The singer's voice can get a tad twangy but the music is pretty good.
And of course, The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang. I am in love with this band. Seriously. ?

Not sure, I'll check the sleeve when I get in my car again.
It's amazing how you change. Like when I was young I swore I would never ever wear a vest - you know under your shirt sort of keeps you warm but is super moffnerd hey. f'n h and here I am and I wear a vest. And I swore I would never listen to country music or the like. f'n h and here I am just picked up telluride sessions from the post office yesterday and it's so sweet. But we change a bit I suppose hey.

There's a lot of great country music and great country players. You just have to get past all that drek that requires stesons and cowoby jackets with tassles hanging from the sleeves and the lyrics about "my wife done left me and my daughter done left me and the dog done s**t on the step and I cry myself to sleep at night thinking on my Mammy"

Finally got Valley of Neptune. Listened to it a bit yesterday and I dont know, it felt like when you know you should like somebody because they're super nice and everything... but they just get on your nerves for some reason. Will keep it in the car for a while though, maybe it will grow on me.

Had a great music day yesterday... picked up at the post office shipped from www.recordstore.co.uk the new Feeder album (signed) and the latest Ash album (limited edition with tour DVD). But I also got, in my post box, a CD that I have been looking for since 1995! I found it in eBay for a dollar! Its by a band called The Caulfields, and I once recorded a song of theirs, Devil's Diary, on some music programme on TV fifteen years ago - I now have the CD... they're kinda like Counting Crows, Toad The Wet Sprocket, etc, but with better guitar work. And you know what? Was able to sing along with Devil's Diary after not hearing it for over a decade. But thats not all... there was another band, this time from 1998, who I have also been looking for since I first heard them - they are called RUTH and released just the one album - think Supergrass - the singer went on to become Aqualung, but this album is pure Britpop/power pop. Found it available for download. Really chuffed

Yeah - they've been busy! Released two EPs under the name Renegades where they went back to the louder, rockier sound of their first couple of albums. Now their new album, called Renegades, is very similar and actually uses 3 songs from those EPs. Seriously good stuff - Feeder have always been one of my favourite bands. I think it was released earlier this month, so expect to see it in SA stores in 2012... thats why I ordered it from the UK. Getting a signed copy was a bonus

The Best of Bill Frisell - Volume 1.
This has just landed on my desk. Having seen Frisell do a duet with Elvis Costello on the latter's "Spectacle" series I have wanted to get something by Frisell. Where to start? No idea, but this one looked interesting.
He's a very good player, but I knew that already. I enjoy his musicality a lot. I enjoy what I can only describe as his textural playing, where he uses the guitar and well chosen effects to create, well, textures to support the melody and soloing.
Interesting liner notes by Elvis Costello, making a case for Bill being at a crossroads of "jazz" and "country".

Errmmm.... Ok... not just that. My ears were initially caught by his work on Loudon Wainwright's album
Here Come The Choppers on which he did great work as part of an all-star backing band that included Jim Keltner and Greg Leisz (another player whose catalog I need to dip into).
