Some classical pieces are very relaxing. My wife and kids dont get my music taste, so we generally listen to Classic FM while traveling. The little one (13 Months) always relaxes more when hearing classical music.
I have strange liking for Baroque music and enjoy Vivaldi, Handel etc, although not that clued up on the genre. I used to have A John Williams(The Guitarist not Composer) Long Play Record of Villa Lobos and Scarlatti that I really enjoyed, still have the pieces playing in my head.
I enjoy the stuff Viccy does as well, Tarrega etc.
Good Stuff ?

Last couple of days:
Traveller by Tim O'Brien. Bluegrass goes to Ireland! The title track is fab.
Two Letter Words Richard Thompson Band. This is the "official bootleg" of his 1994 band tour. Danny "no relation" Thompson is in wonderful form, but the boss manages to make sure that nobody steals the show.
Breathe With Me Athena. Restrained but intense. Low key but powerful.

Listening to some acoustic versions of Lifehouse songs. They have alot more talent than I initially thought. Love the song Out of Breath.

I dont think I have ever paid more than R20 for a Jayhawks album! Really solid country/folk stuff.

I've been on a major Allan Holdsworth bender, last night I watched his performance at a place called Yoshi's on DVD - The band was incredible, not only did it have Allan Holdsworth on guitar but also Alan Pasque on keyboard, Jimmy Haslip on bass and Chad Wackerman on drums ? At this moment I'm listening to his live album "All Night Wrong" and also "Hard Hat Area" ? Truly a legend musician ?
Also for all those aspiring eight-finger tappers out there I highly recommend Jean Baudin, he's this bassist who plays an 11-string bass, primarily all tapped. His music is incredible though cause it's all done with one track of him playing alone, so he has complete dynamic control and plays on these elements incredibly well. He proves that there's a lot more subtlety to the technique than most people would believe.
Recently got Shawn Lane's "Powers Of 10 Live" and that has brought nothing but the most gargantuan smile to my face, not only was he one of the fastest players around (apparently his alternate picking clocked in at 19 notes a second) but he also had a very unique and beautiful feel to his playing and his music - if you've never checked out Shawn Lane do yourself a favour and correct that, I'd suggest tracks like Esperanto, Grey Pianos Flying, Rules Of The Game or Epilogue For Lisa.
Also recently got Mattias Eklundh's "Freak Guitar" album and yet again this amazing guitar player has managed to shake the very core of my existence with his brilliance, I can't recommend this album highly enough! If not for his brilliant rendition of La Bamba, then for his jazzy cover of Detroit Rock City and if not for that then for the amazing clash of eastern melodic concepts and Frank Zappa that is "The Revenge Of The Bambi Loving Terrorist" and if not for that then for the 15 or so other works of pure genius on the album ?

My "commute" normally takes between 10 and 15 minutes. This morning it took an hour - most of that spent going exactly nowhere. Oh well... if life sends you lemons and all that.... so I rummaged around to see what was in the car. Might as well have a change of musical diet. I found Tom Verlaine's album Around. This is all instrumental. I understand it's all pieces written for movie soundtracks. It's one of a pair of albums that he released simultaneously in 2006 after a long stretch (about a dozen years) of not releasing anything.
He veers into territory that I wouldn't associate him with (which reflects my shortcomings, not his). He's such an inventive player that it all works. Goes to show how far good players can stretch themselves. What I like, apart from Verlaine's usual quirky, unpredictable playing is the moods that he creates and conveys, the pictures that he paints in the listener's mind.
Have a copy handy for your next traffic jam.

MuteMath - Armistance ... what and amazing album!

Cesaria Evora... ???!?! Hmmm, I'm at work so I guess the twangs wails of Led Zep will have to wait until I get home.

Cesaria Evora... !?!
I like her - only heard an album once. Really nice
I know this album name sounds corny but this is really an incredible band. They're called Nile. The album is 'Those who the gods detest' This is their latest album and it's pretty amazing. Don't know much about them - this is my son's type of music ... ?
