Office life permits some listening today :woohoo:
Lyle Lovett - Natural Forces
I got interested in Lovett after I saw him perform the title track of this album on Elvis Costello's Spectacle show (clip on youtube). So I've been meaning to get some of his stuff for a while now and finally I did.
Well... All very nicely done, and there's great playing from a whole bunch of top Nashville (Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Alison Krauss's brother Viktor) and LA (Dean Parks) session guys, but it all left me a bit meh, starting with the over-arranged title track. Plus I don't like the sound of it one bit - with a heavily compressed sound that shows that even Nashville is involved in the loudness wars. The best things on here are the solos from the session players - notably the reliably fab Duncan.
Fairport Convention - Moat On The Ledge
A live set from their 1981 reunion concert. Just goes to show what they have lost over the years. They've always had good players in the band, but the lineup here - with Dave Swarbrick on fiddle and Richard Thompson on guitar - shows what a musical punch they used to pack. Probably this comes close to the famed 1970 live line up with Swarb and RT pushing each other and playing with great fire and imagination over a very solid and sympathetic rhythm section (Pegg, Mattacks, Nicol). Original vocalist Judy Dyble comes out of retirement for a pretty good version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now".

Just listened to Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away.

Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely - not all the tracks as good as the brilliant ones - which there really are some of!
I dig the Carolina Drama ?
+1
I really like that song.

Madam asked me to water the garden this morning, so I took my iPod and earphones and off I went.
A couple of short songs played and then the shuffle selected Eight Miles High by Golden Earring.
Almost 20 minutes of memories of my misspent youth. ☹
In my teenage years I had the vinyl long playing record called Eight Miles High, probably bought second hand on Greenmarket Square or at a little shop in Long Street.
The hole was slightly off center and the entire song sped up and slowed down in waves.
It almost sounds strange on mp3 ?

Any of you guys heard them? Members of Taxi Violence, Lark, and the Plastics; two 4-string basses, drums, vocals - no guitars. I like the whole album and there are some cool tones coming from the basses but sometimes think it sounds like there are two basses for the sake of having two basses. Still cool though IMO. Any other opinions?

Thin Lizzy - Thin Lizzy.
Also quite a bit of Zappa thanks to a certain thread on this here forum ?

When the screamy thing and backing vocals come in it reminds me of the Black Crowes ?

Once again, I find myself sitting hear listening/watching Radiohead - The King of Limbs 'Live from the Basement' Bluray.
I find this album interesting, as being a huge fan of 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer', I never really got on with anything they did after 'Kid A' as it was just too experimental for me, but this album is just so very interesting, seeing how they make use of layering and building up the rhythm to support the song and keep it interesting.... And the fact you are watching them doing it all 'Live' in the studio really adds to it.... Brilliant stuff!

Really, if you like John Hiatt and you havent listened to Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns yet, please do so as soon as possible. I've had it a while and got the latest album - Mystic Pinball. I listened to the former again today and it is just so wonderful you cant believe.

At the moment I'm really enjoying a Polish prog band called Disperse, their album Living Mirrors is pretty cool, and Jakub Zytecki is pretty much on his way to be one of the next guitar titans of the modern world, insanely good phrasing and technique and he's not even 21 yet :?

Blackbyrd - Country all girl group. Nicely written, music at times bare (only guitar and strings, or piano) which I love. Very good vocals....I know its not anybody's cup of tea, but there you go.
