I'm guessing, but Holdsworth likes smaller, hollow bodies and a headless is obviously less neck heavy. A zero fret also makes sure the action is perfect.
From what I understand Alan is pretty much bang on, one of the other reasons he states is cause he doesn't earn much money so having something that can fit in the overhead compartment on a plane and not weigh much is a plus.

I think the "brown" is actually gold, it just doesn't come out looking quite right in the photo.
