  • Allbang & Strumit - JHB - Linden

I don't know how many of you know about this shop in Jhb,

Allbang & Strumit
365 Republic Rd
Darrenwood/Linden
Ronnie 0117824852

Ronnie has a nice assortment of old equipment some very collectable, definatly worth popping in for tea and scones, he is a drum specialist and has all the hard to find stuff, but has all kinds of goodies such as some vintage equipment such as rare Dobro resonator guit , Aria base guit, amps, stomp boxes etc.

the only issue that I have with Ronnie is he exports some of the collectables as if we have an abundance in SA.......

Stay tuned
( no I am Not getting commision)

Interesting. I think I'll go check it out this weekend.
mmmmm, does he have a website?

i was there a few weeks ago and was nicely impressed with their stock and the prices

hey, 14 k for a refinshed original sixties jazz master is not to much

and 22k for that all original sunburst '62 Jaguar... drool...
Those Jags have been up on that wall for years. If the prices were right, they would sell - here or abroad like most of the gear he buys. Imho they are overpriced :-\
I've bought some gear from them. There's no such thing as quickly popping in there. It takes at least half an hour to buy strings. 5mins for strings, 25mins for chewing cud.

While I know that "older is not always better", one should first compare his vintage prices with that of a new or re-issue Jag or Jazz master (US or Japanese).

Certainly looks like a very interesting shop to visit....I would not mind spending a few hours there ?

The first hour you're like to spend finding the place... do yourself a favour checking the map and GPS coordinates on their website.

It however is not big enough to spend a few hours in. I tried twice, but found myself walking out in half an hour on both occasions.
The first thing is, you are absolutely sure that each and every price (for anything close to desirable) is on par at least with US prices. The oke apparently mainly lives on buying stuff locally and selling it off overseas, so there is no reason for him to sell anything cheaply. Looking for a bargain, you are better off elsewhere. If you're ready to fork out competitive prices to abroad, you might save yourself the hassle of bringing in stuff from overseas.
The second thing is the quantity of stuff. There is just not all that many items since goodies just ship out and sell off. The Jags being the only exception, for whatever reason.

Bottom line: I am not negative, but there is no reason for having romantic notions about the store. It would be nice if they had an up-to-date stocklist online.

                                I hear you.
What I find fascinating about the shop is in fact the absence of the run of the mill guitars, amps , etc. It's almost unheard of nowadays that a music store only stocks vintage-like equipment and the guy must be brave to do just that. Yes he obviously exports some stock...(he has to to make a living)...especially in the light that there's not a vibrant vintage market in SA.... our most desirable vintage guitars have been exported during the years ~1980-1990's ☹
Those guys have many stories and much experience to share, they've been gigging for jonks and they know their stuff. So you cant find them without gps, buy a friggen map book and get with the program, its not Linden but Darrenwood, at the first circle on Malebongwe drive, pretty hard to cock that up. Maybe the guy is sentimental about some of his gear and its reflected in the price. I bought a new bass there that was R800 cheaper than I was quoted at ant of the other local name brand chain shops.
So since you were R800 better off, I'm not entitled to post my opinion? ?
Well i pop in about once every 2 months , as i love 2nd hand , vintage gear , and they often have very off mainstream guitars and amps ,

the one word of advice , chat to them and tell them what you interested in , as soon as he got to know i'm a jazz player he digs out gear not on display , showed me an old gibson acoustic from 30's, and as for prices he is negotiable , and lots of bargains do float around if you into used gear , a while back i saw a mint gibson les paul classic and his opening bid was 12k ,

so yes i agree not a store for everyone and little or no hi tech gear and its a small store about the size of a large living room so not a place to spend more than 30 min unless you demo something BUT it's worth a regular visit if you like older/vintage/non mainstream gear cos he gets some way interesting stock you won't find anywhere ,

so that said , maybe i see you there ?
