Speak to guys/shops who do setups and repairs - often guys will try something different and swop them out quite soon. I got a sweet set of as new LaBella flatwounds for 1/3 price. Though, I expect you'll find a set or 3 of flat's, tapewound's are a lot less common.
Nice thing, tape wounds literally last forever. There's little to no drop off in tone or volume over time...probably because there's so little to being with 😆 I had a set on a bass for >15yrs, eventually the metal core got brittle from being bent through the tuning peg and snapped. Simple fix, I'd left enough string on to rewind and continue.
I see there's a far better selection now than when I went looking. I had one choice - Rotosound Swing. I see Bothner's got a set of Fender's at R650ish - not outrageous - I've seen some bass strings priced looney (D'addario NYXL's...eish)
