Rick Beato gets into it, and I pretty much agree with everything.

I'd add, auto-tue in particular is a attempt to automate a tedious editing task (pitch correction) - which Rick gets into (super cool insights). It has, sadly, turned into a genre. Hopefully it's like the 80's where synth everything was the thing, and in time, it'll become but another tool in the arsenal. (Wishful thinking, live auto-tune of a weak vocal performance is too tempting not to use).

I actually don't mind autotune as a genre, it's not a sound I particularly gravitate to, but at the end of the day it's just an effect. I do think that it's overused at the moment and that is likely to fall out of favour at some point.

Just had a funny thought. Frets are just auto tune for stringed instruments.

Yeeeeaaahhh, I started off thinking - big deal, it's not gonna stick around. Now, I can't switch on the radio - 100% guarantee there'll be some auto-tuned kak on. I honestly don't think the genre will die...mainly as it really does work (and help poor performers) live. Maybe it'll get dialed back some, but I fear, we'll have it around for a long time (Shred ain't dead 😆 )

Did get thinking...who get's a pass? I thought of Daft Punk - they have a space/robot vibe, it works there.

V8 Autotune as a studio tool is definitely here to stay... it's just too useful to get rid of.
What I do think will go out of fashion is autotune as an overt vocal effect.

The more I think about it, the less likely I think it is gonna - hopefully pop(ular) music will shed most of the "new and shine-y" toy vibe and it'll be the home for 'rappers' that can't sing.

Cher's Believe was a 1998 release and well, 23 yrs later... 😬 What will break me ina couple decades is the nostalgia swing for the 2000's/2010's and there'll be a wholel auto-tune revival. Just when you thought it was over.

And that, will drive me to get a full stack. A nasty-ass Randall, just for Dimebag!
