Choosing a song is proving harder than I expected. Needs to be something that I know well enough to think of, but don't know so well that I'm too led by the original. Also can't be too iconic... you'd need a serious pair to rewrite bohemian rhapsody

Yeti Kinda similar issue here - It's the vocal that's throwing me, Of the tunes I don't already know but would like to try (and havn't already entered at some time :grin🙂, the vocal is beyond my imagination. (Queen did cross my mind, One Vision was always a fav)

Got me thinking of instrumentals, which could/would be a even harder act to follow?

At worst, it'll be a cell phone entry with me hacking away at <censored> 😉

I'd originally intended to insert a section in the middle of this song, but then came around to the idea of working out a kind of intro. It's a Pink Floyd song, so swirly, weird acoustic intros are OK, aren't they? In any case, I reimagined the first part of the song rather than the back end. Hope that's OK. I found a file of someone playing piano for it and then put guitar, vocals and some harmonica (because my wife bought me one for my birthday earlier this year) over it.

UPDATE: I have included the very generous contribution of Stoffeltoo on brass.

The only available original is a live recording from a SaMo concert, we tried to make our cover more metal-like.

I'm more nowhere now with this challenge, than I was when we started 😁

Even broke the ice off fingers and re-learned "Hero of the Day" (Metallica, only post Black album tune I like). But no, after trying a bunch of things on a bunch of tunes - I just can't seem to get away from a decent groove for 8 bars and that's pretty much it.

Finding it super tough to re-write a riff? THink it's easier to re-imagine a chord progression than a riff.

I've got an idea and I've been working on getting it into the fingers - it's more of a "song in the style of another song" entry than a "finish an existing song" type thing though so I'm not too sure about how legal it will be

Feels like forever. Herewith my entry. Special thanks to Norio and Bluetone for their contributions on lead guitar.

No vocals from me as I couldn't write any lyrics that made sense.

Here's my entry, inspired by Green Day's Brain Stew.
I took the riff and first verse pretty much unchanged and wrote a couple of other verses with similar rhyming structures and of course added my own lead guitar. I also doubled the tempo under the riff and melody to give it a slightly more frenetic feeling.

Here's my quick and dirty entry - quick play straight into my phone. Compression and volume adjustment in reaper.

Basically took Nirvana's (amongst others) My girl and re-imagined it as something I could play for my baby daughter. Much lighter lyrics and some major chords sprinkled throughout.
