Hi there,

i am currently in the process of winding a humbucker pickup and I am getting confused regarding winding direction of the bobbins. I have seen two conflicting methods one saying wind both coils counter clockwise because the wiring will make them electrically out of phase. Another method saying one bobbin should be wound clockwise and the other anti clockwise. I am finding this very confusing could someone please help. Thanks

Hey Winder
Welcome to the forum. I dont know much about pickup winding. I have never done it myself. I did read up on it at one stage when I had plans to try it.. but never did.

Anywho. I recall reading that both scenarios that you describe are an option. When both coils are wound clockwise i think it introduces hum or sometging like that. The second iteration of starting clockwise, and then doing the second coil in anticlockwise i think elimimates hum.
That is my limited understanding of it and i might be totally wrong. Hope someone else can chime in.

Have you tried asking someone on a pickup forum? I would reach out to someone at Bareknuckle pickups forum. Their guys used to be active on the forum at some point.

Thanks for the advice that’s great and yes I will give the bareknuckle site a try too. Thanks again
