  • Using Zoom conferencing software- useful to know

Heya All,

Pre-CoVid-19 I wasn't at all familiar with Zoom. Now people are using it more, it might be useful to know a few things.

It wouldn't stop me (or most of us) from using it - but there are a few things you might want to do when you install & use it.

A useful Verge article on the issues and what you can do to mitigate them

A video focussing mainly on privacy issues - Honestly, you could skip this - this wouldn't effect most of us for musical purposes.

Even if you don't care about the privacy issues (but you should), you should still care about it leaking your windows login credentials:

Zoom just gives me a bad smell --- if at all possible try using google hangouts instead (Although google's privacy is also questionable, their security is usually top-notch)

Shhhhheeeeeeeet...that's bad. That's a really easy hack. Didn't realize hash were that easy to crack with contemporary hardware, Way back in the day, I used to get up to four week estimates for brute forcing them. 🤣

Thanks man, made the tweak suggested in the article.

I used to use appear.in - worked great - but they removed their non corporate option. I'll use whatever the other person is happy with, Google hangouts, skype or whatsapp (if they had a video client for windows anyway), My preference is google hangouts - not that I trust them - they just write better software than the rest.

If I were privacy mad, I'd be rocking a chromebook. My brother was showing me how locked down it is and how super locked down it can get. Not unhackable, but not worth the effort for hackers to try (or so I'm told)

I realize it's not an option for most people, but we are self-hosting https://rocket.chat/ for work and it's great, and no privacy worries to boot.
