It's Metallica...big surprise!

not.

For fun : What are the tunes & what do all the riffs have in common?

It's missing something from Kill 'em All. Yeah, I'm Bummed too. I just couldn't get anything I knew to work. In the mix: 3 from Black, 1 from Ride the Lightening, 2 from Master of Puppets and 1 from Garage Days.

Motivated by the Contrast Challenge, I revisited the idea but now looking to really bring out the contrasting sections I pastich'ed together. Got to think more broadly on how the sections worked all together dynamically (as a song of parts, instead of a puree of riffs). Thanks to Yeti for the topic!

My dudes, I thought I could get passable take on my current braai nylon. I was somewhat defeated by ancient medium tension strings and a action that one wouldn't call sexy.

Excuses aside...

Been playing with medley's of riffage for quite a while. Finding ways to transition between them is where I reckon there's a bit of magic. There's a transition at 0:52 that I rather like playing - much fun!

Working on this version for a while (18mths?) - intended to entertain the instagram generation. Real happy to have a rough version of this recorded. Even crappy video makes it that much easier to remember later. I'll have a video note of a riff over audio everytime.

Next...hmm - The Cure, The Clash, Megadeth, Slayer?

Heya! Love the way you strung those together. Also gets an automatic like from me for including some "Orion". Must've taken soooo looong to put this together, love it!

klaasvakie Heya! Love the way you strung those together.

Thanks Man, it's a bit of fun to keep me amused riffing out on a nylon stringer (not sure why I dig metal on a nylon, but I do!)

Since we've been inundated by guesses (Klaas probably got them all)

    Enter Sandman (duh)
    Battery
    Orion
    For Whom the Bell Tolls
Am I evil (Yes, it's a cover but Garage Days was a great album, so I count it as a Metallica tune)
    Wherever I may Roam
    Nothing Else Matters (dbl duh)

I used the intro->verse riff from Battery twice (either side of Battery), because I really dig it and it works sweetly into Orion.

What do they all have in common? Painfully obvious now - but not when arranging - it took me a while to figure out how to make my life easy arranging this. Stick to riffage in the key of E. Sounds easy, but my choices from Kill em All were either in G or A. Though future medley's will be planned a bit better - like including modulating keys...we'll see if that works.

My favourite part is 0:52 dropping into that fakemenco version of Whereever I may Roam - which is the only riff I really made my own. And that only came about because I was really bangin my head (heh) trying to figure out how to transition out from Am I evil.

I'd say the hardest transition to figure out was from For Whom the Bell Tolls into Am I Evil - it doesn't sound like anything special is happening...It took me a while to figure out when to change the riff tempo - tricky (but fun).

The only part I'm not happy with is Nothing Else Matters - transition is ok (i think) but it's too long and I play it kak - that will change at some stage.

V8 Klaas probably got them all

I'm surprisingly bad at ID'ing Metallica Riffs. I got Enter Sandman, Orion, Wherever I May Roam and Nothing Else Matters. I think the problem is that there are so many Metallica riffs out there, they kinda blend together in my mind.

V8 Stick to riffage in the key of E.

If you don't tune down, you can add Sad But True, and the riff at around bar 32 here (https://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/metallica-sad-but-true-tab-s317t0) might be a good one to initiate a key change on. I'll have to try it when I get back to my guitar.

Am I Evil was for the Metallica geek (Garage Days is a great album imho) but Orion was well spotted, wasn't sure it translated like I hoped. I was chuffed at how For Whom the Bell Tolls came out (originally learnt it on bass).

Yeahhh man, there are sooooo many good Metallica riffs (even a few on Load & Reload) . I've still got a good few in the party trick bag - Master of Puppets, One, My Friend of Misery, a bunch off Kill em All - there's even one off Load I quite liked (shh, don't tell anyone 😆 )

klaasvakie If you don't tune down, you can add Sad But True,

I do know the tune - (Bar 10 riff is a fav), @ bar 32, could use that to switch from A to E, or from E head into A - gonna try that - thanks!

My nylon wanders towards Eb, but I keep it E std 95%...I've two dropped D tunes that's got me thinking of a Drop D medley - just need to find more drop D riffage I dig. Hmm, thinking about it - whats nice about Drop D is that the tunes are generally centred around that dropped D - they'll naturally fit together.

V8 just need to find more drop D riffage I dig.

Too late, I'm waiting there for you .... everlong.

V8 (Garage Days is a great album imho)

Yeah it really is, quite unique to have a whole double CD full of covers. I think on most of them they add a grittiness which really improves upon the original. Astronomy and Turn the page are the ones that stand out for me.

          Bwahaha, walked into that one.

(At least that I'm feeling) - even though drop d is apparently the grunge tuning (Tom Morello interview).

Thanks - Now I'm leaning more towards RATM...But what's interesting is that there are not a lot of drop D tunes

klaasvakie Astronomy and Turn the page are the ones that stand out for me.

Am I evil and The Wait are my two. Norio is a huge fan of Whisky in the Jar - I'm clearly a riff junkie - who actually learns the whole song anyways...? (Everyone other than me I reckon 😸 )

V8 But what's interesting is that there are not a lot of drop D tunes

They are kinda rare, this question comes up on Reddit fairly regularly. If you are looking for more inspiration, here are a couple threads:

I had to learn whiskey in the Jar for Garage Days, It is a very fun song to play, also one of the few (for me at least) where the rhythm part is way more fun to play then the lead, that rhythm is just infectious.

I am soooo guilty of learning riffs instead of songs --- I think most guitarists fall into that trap.

Glad I'm not going crazy - went through the lists (thanks!). Got a few to try out, but not much grabbed me by the earballs. For me, it's gotta stand alone on acoustic (no vox, no face melting tone-age).

Drop D ain't gonna be easy.

Were it a crime...I'm 100% guilty. For me, there's gotta be a actual reason to learn the whole tune. (E.g. I'm going to perform it). Not that there arn't good reason (developing songwriting) to learn the whole thing (transitions, middle 8, etc...).
