Perhaps I'm getting the itch to be in a band again, found myself wondering what kinda band would I want to be in?

Not really thinking genre specific - though I'm sure that my 'criteria' and questionable skills will exclude some genres (Classical/Orchestra ?).

I'd like to be in a party band - that is, people come to have a good time when ya play - preferably shaking their tail feathers and boogie. Not afraid to play covers, but able to pull off originals in a crowd pleasing manner.

Like to experiment with the rhythm section being somewhat electronic (DJ running loops/etc) and have a vocalist that can get peeps into it. There'd have to be bass and probably guitar too.

I'd guess funk meets jazz, meets pop (whatever passes for pop these days) and definitely no auto-tune allowed. Something that could go from a electronic festival stage to your local pub and either audience could get into it.

'What kinda band would you dream up for yer'self?

*Edit : I reckon I'm looking for the love child of The Beastie Boys and Jamiroquai, with Bill Withers and Freddy Mercury as godparents ? ? ?

Phew. Good question.

Probably the first thing would be clarity that there would be no interest i chasing income and gigs, and also no recording interest. For the simple reason that these stressors sometimes contribute to unecessary grief between bandmates.

A party band would be awesome. In my head i picture a type of chili peppers style band playing a cool funk rock type groove . Relaxed but commited musos, having a good time and playing solid party tunes. An ACDC cover band would he awesome too.

I think a cover or tribute band would be good as it is always easier for a crowd to get groovy if they know the songs.
My old band played original tunes and to get a crowd grooving was very difficult as most of the tunes were unknown. That and who knew if the tunes were any good for that setting.

Hmmm... nice question.
As a vocalist, I guess the music I'd like to perform would probably be vocally driven 'symphonic' metal (think nightwish or falconer) but mostly because my voice has a classical leaning... As the garage days guys know, I'm no rock singer. ?
As a guitarist, I'd probably lean towards something a little simpler and cleaner... possibly even folky.

I do agree that a party band would be good fun though.

I think my ideal 'band' would be a pub style band. You know the kind you find doing some background stuff at your local. Two guitars (one acoustic and one electric), vocals and a little bit of percussion. We'd play covers and originals of mostly acoustic ballads I reckon. Deep stuff ? Heck, even folk songs (just not the corny or patriotic ones) Afrikaans would definitely be included.

Oh, wow!! This is fun!!

I'd pick a three-piece. My choir boy voice, a groovy bassist and a keyboard genius.

Until you make it, I guess you have to fake it, so we'd go for synth pop covers: think Kraftwerk (The Model), Depeche Mode (anything up until the "Violator" album) and Yello (pitch shift to taste) ? We'd also do Boo! covers. I could occasionally pitch in on rhythm guitar – for a few laughs – and it wouldn't hurt if the keyboardist were also a hot saxophonist.

Original music is a must, and while it would have a pop flavour, I'd love to write me a Vienna (Ultravox); something deep. We'd need a gimmick, hm... Fancy dress/magic tricks/karaoke/all of the aforementioned? And a kick ass band name.

As a teenager in my first band, we looked to other younger bands for inspiration, like Ash and Silverchair. We took ourselves quite seriously. A couple of years later, tired of nonrecognition, we said let's just have fun as a party band. That was fun, but then we all got jobs. If I were to get into it again, we'd have to work smarter. Each do his/her homework, prepared to thrash things out on a Saturday, or every second Saturday. We'd also have a manager, and our own sound engineer. @V8 Thanks for starting this topic. It's fun to dream!

    what type of Band.... .
MMMMM I'm big into metal and rock, love bands like 5 finger death punch etc.. so naturally the best type of band for me would be Lounge..

I could see myself noodling a guitar while a Lady vocals..

    Fun topic.

Give me a Jinjer and Deftones love child with a bit of an Indie influence.

A focus on mixing different styles, good lyrical content and album writing.

Jazzy rhythm section with varying vocal and lead styles.

It should be easy and catchy to listen to, but still provide ear candy for the avid muso.

    daveo1977 It's fun to dream!

It is! Though a mate of mine keeps telling me, without a dream there wouldn't be a reality.

Had a similar experience as you, A few years after the band went it's separate ways - we all came to similar conclusions too!

100$ - I'd definitely have a manager too, even a mate external to the band who want to be a part of the fun. Just having someone in that role is damn useful. I play jr sound guy for my mates gig's - also super useful to have ears off stage too ?
