  • Wanted: Value of '82 Ibanez Artist

Hi All,

I am posting this on behalf of a friend who's finances went south recently due to high medical expenses after his leg had to be amputated.

His request is simple: For how much can he advertise the '82 Ibanez Artist and where do you recommend he place the adverts, apart from this forum?

I understand that many factors must be taken into consideration when evaluating something, and I don't think the pictures provide enough information, however, a ball park figure will be appreciated.

Guitar Info obtained from the Web:
Ibanez Artist Guitar
Serial No: L824639
I.e. Year: 1982

Production No: 4693

According to the Guitar Dater Project, the guitar was made at the Terada Plant, Japan on December, 1982.

Production Number 4639.

The Terada Musical Instrument Co., Ltd. was established in 1912, at the beginning Terada was making Violins for Toy purposes, after World War II, around 1955 Terada started to make in earnest ‘Strings Instruments’. In the 1970’s they had three plants near Nagoya area and produced more than 10,000 guitars per month for Domestic market and also for Overseas market, but now 18 that amount today. The Terada factory is now building hollow and semi-hollow body guitars for Epiphone as well as their own 'Thumb' brand guitars. At one point made Tobias bases prior to Tobias being sold to Gibson.

Hiya, sorry to hear about your mate's health - hope it only improves from here.

70/80's artists go for somewhere between 500-1900 USD on ebay. The AR500's seem to be valued, not sure what model you have there, look highend and in very good nick? As a guess, if it's a AR500 - locally, I'd say start at around R12-15k and be negotiable.

The Gear Junkie had a similar one w/case at R15k (inc 20% comm), not sure if it sold yet though.

You could put it on consignment at Gear Junkie/Ronnie Allbang & Strumit, advertise it via facebook on SA Music Store (SAMIS) and Revolution Music Trade groups or here on GuitarTalk. And, of course, Gumtree is always an option.

Avoid OLX/Junkmail, scammers paradise. Though that can also happen on gumtree & facebook groups too.

FYI : The Terada factory is the only one outside of the US that Martin licenced to produce Martin acoustics! Though the fujigen factory is better known (I think because they made a lot of fender's for the US market).

Hi V8, your meaningful and quick response is highly appreciated. Thanx!

There was a white '82 Artist on the SAMIS FB group recently that was priced at R14k if I remember correctly. Not sure if it sold at that price though. I think this is the AR500 since it has the decorative tailpiece, the cheaper models have a normal tonepros-style tailpiece.

Thanx Klaasvakie! My friend made special reference to the gold plated pickups, etc. Does that make any financial difference?

Good gold-plated hardware is generally a bit more expensive than chrome/nickel/black.

These pickups are identical except for the color, but differ quite a lot in price:

Not sure how I would price that for a 2nd-hand sale though.

I concur with V8, Its an AR500. R12-15k .Stunning guitars, worth more than that IMO playability and quality wise. But it really depends on finding the right Ibanez collector?

Of course, it also depends on how big his rush is to sell. He would have to be prepared to wait for that kind of asking price (R15k). Maybe he gets lucky early on, but generally that's seldom the case.

It is an urgent sale. We are talking Medical Aid claims and they have little if any sympathy ...

bernie I should add - you will get lowballed. Do not take it personally! Usually it's a trader who will offer around 40-50% of the asking price. If it's urgent 9-10k should be achievable - good luck with the sale!

I know there is at least one ibby collector out there - a guy in Bloem who has > 40 ibby's!

bernie No at all - but I don't have it. His mate did the deal on his behalf, sadly I don't have either's details.

But pop it up on gumtree, that's how he found me. All of @studmissile's links are greeeat. If in Cpt you can also chat to Graham @ Gear Junkie about consignment or in Jhb, Ronnie/Jos @ Ronnie's Allbang and Stumit - they may make you an offer, but it'll be a rather low one to purchase as stock.

bernie how do I get in touch? Have you perhaps settled on a price?

        Best regards

Does he by any chance have any ice skates?
