  • Solos for the intermediate player

I found this thread on reddit to be quite interesting

I consider myself an intermediate player, and having a list of songs that are manageable without weeks of work on each sound like it will be useful. My recent adventures with November Rain have taught me the hard way that choosing a song thats way above your level is really hard on the motivation.

Are there any songs you can add to the list?

klaasvakie changed the title to Solos for the intermediate player.

I haven't tried this yet, but considering it:
Songsterr - You can filter on your level of playing and hopefully gives you a realistic results.

It is...! Even in failure, I try and get the technique out of the piece I'm struggling with -at least I get an idea of where I'm struggling.

Not all that many I can think of, but I'm far more a rhythm/bass player.

Always liked Spin Doctors - Two Princes for the phrasing of that solo, also doesn't use a typical minor pentatonic.

For something different I always liked the solo from Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan (Fun way to learn the Dorian mode and hear it mixed with E Minor Pentatonic).

And pretty much anything by the doors that has a guitar solo - almost always some flavour of Minor Pentatonic - more lead than solo, but that's entirely my speed ?

And a +1 for Nothing Else Matters - @NorioDS tells me it's a Hetfield solo - shouldn't surprise me - it's about the only Metallica solo I like.

Oohh and I almost forgot the shadows - again more lead/melody than solo....but there's lot of good stuff to pickup learning one's way through Apache.

Wow, first time really listening to the solo in planet caravan. It's good, and at least from a distance it feels like it is in the "intermediate" catagory, but it is loooong so gonna be tough on the memory. Also quite a lot of dynamics, one thing getting the notes down, another thing expressing them like this.

W.r.t. Two princes, I enjoy playing the main riff, but never really tried the solo, I must go dig out a tab.

My addition to this list is Brothers in arms by Dire Straights - nothing very fast except for the very last run in the fade-out. If you want to do the whole volume-pedal thing like Knopfler it is probably much harder but just getting the notes down is pretty "intermediate" I think.

I really wouldn't try and note for note it...rather learn it as a 70's jam solo? I would try and get some the dorian licks down and listen to how/when he blends E pentatonic and the dorian mode together and understand when he changes between the two.

I'm fan of the tune - mainly due to the phrasing in the solo. While I forget the notes, I cannot get that phrasing out of my head.
