This poll has ended.
NorioDS changed the title to VOTE: "Space Guitar" Challenge.

Bumpety bump. Voting ends in 4 days!

VOTED! Will line up some comments when I can get a little time to sit and do so.

Difficult, depending on what "spaced" feeling you feel like. Vangelis or??
        Nice work, all.

Studmissile : Have I heard your chord progression before? It's familiar, but the slide guitar seemed new? Them slide guitar skills have definitely been sharpened up, very tasty! Thought the slide was spacey, the rest not as much.

klassvakie : Wasn't sure at first w/o the fx - but it did feel lonely/forlorn in space with a sweet whistling solo. ? for the creative execution!. Funny story - the kitto is 'trained' to a whistle - so when she heard this she thought it was dinnertime. One very confussed kitto ?

Jazzman : It felt like it had all the elements of a ambient track - drenched delays, backwards guitars, ebow-like effects - but it I missed the glue that would turn it into a track. A repeated motif might have worked in this?

Me : No apologies, it was last jam minute. Did find out two interesting things.
          1. digital clipping isn't ALWAYS bad...I think I found the 0.0001% of the time it could work. The rhythm guitars were clipping a lot - It was a accident I kept.Liked the way it filled the space up with noise.

          2. Vibrato/tremelo lends a movement to sustained notes that is really nice when subtly applied. Overnight, I've become a BEEG vibrato fan on my synth bass patches - using it subtly, around 20-30% mix. Subtle enough you don't hear it's there as much as feel when it's not.

Nice one guys, I voted klassvakie - he had a song (harmony+melody) that had a good story to back it up.

          Some highlights for me

@V8, that run from 30s-40s is pure genius. It sounds very much like you used a talkbox - love the effect. I also like the way it gets complimented by the run at ~55s. I don't know enough theory to figure out why those two runs work well together (they both sound minor pentatonic), but I like them.

@studmissile - the slide playing was awesome. Also have to compliment you on your timekeeping sir, don't think I heard a single mis. Listening to my entry - sheesh, I was all over the show.

@Jazzman105 - Man this is just so far out from anything I would create, I wouldn't even know were to start. This feels like it should go straight into some movie soundtrack.

Thanks for the kind words @V8, yeah after hitting submit I was seriously doubting the wisdom of entering a fingerstyle acoustic song into space themed comp. I have a heavily chorused version which I almost submitted, but it felt like adding an effect just for the effects' sake.

I can't help but feel I failed in Norio's original instruction to make the guitar the focus of the song, the guitar is definitely an accompaniment rather then a focus in my entry. To try and remedy that I also did a little 4-bar solo, but it sounded so similar to the intro/outro theme that I decided to leave it out in the end.

Anyway, this was great fun - thanks all

Thanks man - The 'lead' was a simple blues patch with a touch of reverb and delay. The rhythm guitar and bass used the same patch (nothing changed, aside from instruments) - which has autowah, drive, comp, delay, reverb, pitch shifters, eq's, kitchen sink - pretty much everything the b2 can have on at the same time :p

Lead started and end with typical SRV/Albert King blues licks (the only two I know). It was a 8 bar blues prgression that got hacked a bit. Inbetween I dabbled a bit with the G major to give it a less bluesy vibe. With the simple progression, This was a good chance to try some modal playing - but I just didn't have the time.

Thank you V8, Guilty as charged, it was a older entry with speed and slide revamp. I'm on a slide guitar binge ?.

Congratulations klaasvakie. Loved the Space with a Spaghetti Western twist. Very clever, nicely played!

Also loved the effects on both V8 and Jazzman105 entries, it was fun to venture into a challenge with more abstract tones. You guys definitely did it justice. Well done all.

Congrats @klaasvakie! I'll be in touch about your R50 Raru voucher ?

Also... you get to pick the next challenge. Got anything in mind?

(To all winners: If you're struggling to come up with an idea for a challenge, you can hand it over to the admins.)

Thanks for the votes guys! I am much surprised but very happy. @NorioDS, please donate my winnings to your charity project.

              My idea for next challenge:

The Gil-More challenge. Time to break out the strats or to split those humbuckers. See if you can sound MORE like Dave Gilmour. Some inspiration:

klaasvakie The bendy challenge with a twist! Like it, should be a challenge (at least for me), not to let all my bends sound bluesy but rather more rock/prog. Think I'll have to go through that video a few times and start working on me fingers - I doubt I've the strength to hit whole tone bends (or higher) reliably.

Also noticed that he's got some protective covering on two of his fingers...first time I've seen him with that. Bending hurt!

klaasvakie Hehe, I've got some nice ones from fingerstyling da bass....pity they're on the 'wrong' hand ? Think some superglue 'fingercaps' will be employed temporarily...

Congratulations Klaasvakie. Yours was a well-deserved win!

That was a very interesting challenge... and certainly challenging for me. I had no ideas and just dove into it at 9pm on deadline night. One unfortunate consequence was that my mix was completely off. The supporting tracks got drowned out and in my haste, I didn't notice. Ahh well... you fail to plan, you plan to fail ?
