“The slow, secret death of the six-string electric. And why you should care.”
Why my guitar gently weeps
I get what his saying.. and it goes to our current lifestyles.. and the new generation.. although called Millennial should actually be called the "Instant generation".. Instant coffee, instant entertainment, instant food, instant information, instant furniture, Nobody has time anymore to sit-down and learn to play the guitar, as someone that is learning how to play, it takes time and effort, something that is becoming increasing of short supply in our instant lives
Tuckstir it takes time and effort, something that is becoming increasing of short supply in our instant lives
Took me 18mths to play my first tune - if I had all the distractions of today, I'd have been a dj...!
The heartening part of the article was that there is hope (kinda) - All the girls picking up guitar because of Taylor Swift. Who apparently plays a mean G major arpeggio ?
It's a monkey see, monkey do world I guess - if we see loads of guitar players in the top 40 then there'll be more interest. If there's loads of electronic musicians in the top 40, we'll see more interest in that.
But one more thing - It's odd for me to say it, but I think there are far too many instruments being produced. It's not like they wear out quickly...there's soooo many good 2nd hand instruments available - I just don't see how manufacturers can forecast expanding business (they have to for investors) but it's just not realistic?
I agree about the 'millenials' comment. Although it may be a sweeping statement, it does ring true. Instant gratification is what we have to contend with these days. Its sad really. My boys would rather garage band than pick up a real guitar. Trying to ween them though.
Also, the choice nowadays is ridiculous! Every 2nd guy is a seller. When will the madness end!?!?
Playing is still very popular! I remarked to my wife's sister-in-law (who wants to play, someday, eventually, maybe) that it is hard work, and my brother in law says he has no problem whatsoever, he can play anything, any request. And mimics the remote button thing.
Yeah, well.
