Without getting into the debate of how old is vintage, let's say it has to at least be twenty years old...it's really just a fun exercise to see some cool stuff. Being a honorary junkie means that I get to see a lot of interesting musical things - sometimes they are winners, other times one wonders what exactly the designers were ingesting... ::) Here's my japanese 'vintage' combo. 1995/6 MIJ Stratocaster - Fuji-gen era (skinny neck), many mods, but looks sneakily stock. We've seen this lady before - easily my favorite instrument. Yip, that's a white sharkfin...for those Niles Rodgers moments :P 70's MIJ Elk FS-22 - Just got this (thanks Bearded Moose!). Rocking little solid state amp - looks a lot like a Fender Princeton Reverb knockoff - font, colours, knobs all VERY similar - but doesn't sound much like it. Doesn't have the sparkle I recall the princeton having - but I do still have to A/B with Wizard's authentic one. The reverb and 'fuzz' are 70's cooooooool. And it's properly loud with the silver coned 12in speaker in small combo package. Not a practice amp - this thing can scream. Although it has it's...umm...idiosyncrasies. The cleans arn't as sparkly as you'd want for a single coil guitar (I think a treble boost pedal would help a lot). The reverb never really shuts off - even on 0, it still bleeds into the circuit. And the verb is VERY springy. The fuzz is more of a sludgy boost - not great for classic single coil tones, but itr can kinda do a SRV thing...throw it a humbuckered rock machine and it's got a lotta charm. Right-o, that's my win-tage MIJ combo. What's yours?
Ah, man, that vintage setup looks sweet! Not so much rockin', but my first acoustic guitar is my dad's old Harmony (made in USA) archtop. He got it when he was 12 or so; he was born in '48. I'll take a picture tonight, but here's Toby Walker playing a similar model: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72JjT3GqDFo I have only one other semi-acoustic (Ibanez) to compare it to, and to my ears the archtop sounds mellow and deep. It's character is quite different to the one in the video - it's also needed some expert repairs; cracks in the top from when it was stored in a cupboard, in a soft case, and some heavy books fell on it... But it plays beautifully now (and lives in its hard case).
Hey if we are talking 20yrs, i will play

1987 charvel and 69ish Elk amp (courtesy of Attila). Amp has been recapped, retubed and re speakered. Sounds tit

I've seen two - 1965 H-22 bass I got around 22 years ago and another recently at the gear junkie (cool acoustic archtop with a ridiculously Vee'ed neck profile).
Another 87 charvel, same elk
That screams 80's...and I'm digging it. And looking VERY mint - nice! I've seen two viking amps (again at the gear junkie) but they are both rather sick :'( - almost all the Elk amps I've seen have taken a beating and been subjected to DIY mods/fixings. Happily surprised when I see a un-abused one!
What a great thread! I'd love an Elk!

          My pride and joys!

I'll work on pix over the next few days. My gear us at the drummer's house. I will be posting a '58 3/4 Les Paul Jr, mid 60s Melody Maker with PAFs, late 59s Fender Tweed Deluxe, and 70 year old lap steel.

Living so far away in Bakersfield, I have had access to many good old instruments.
