There are so many great players... David Gilmour ranks as one of my all time heroes. But I recently discovered Blackmore's Night - Richie Blackmore's current band. They're into folky, renaissance type of music - a lot of acoustic but with some really hot rock solos as only Blackmore can.
The nice thing about these older players is how exceptionally skilled they are... they may be gray, bald, fat and not so cool looking anymore but the 30 years plus experience really shows.
I also recently discovered Tommy Emmanual - check him out on YouTube. Unbelievable. Whilst on the topic of YouTube - it seems there are hundreds of unsung heroes out there - exceptionally good guitarists whom few people have ever heard of - just some bloke with a video camera in his living room, churning out riffs and innovations that is just awesome.

No no no, jimi was one of the best, just remember he was influenced by other players ... so "the one" would not be correct.

I like the way he put stuff together. It's not that he was the first, but he definitely was one of the most creative.

Although Hendrix has been my favorite guitarist for yonks, Gillmour's - Remember that night concert shows that like good wine guitarist improve with age, Clapton's Crossroads 2004 as well. The guitarist that really wows me is the over 70 year old Buddy Guy. Wish that Jimi and SRV were still with us, it would bea treat to hear how they matured.
