Congratz Hasie & PaulE! Your collaboration created some magic this month - good idea to get started on lullaby, you'll need a repertoire soon 8)

Now for the booby prize...let's hear the idea's for the next challenge?

warrenpridgeon

Congrats to the winners!
Keen to see what theme comes out for the next one.

peterleroux

Well done!

wern101

Well done Hasie and PaulE. Well deserved! :goodtimes: :applause:

Yes, let's.

I reckon we are a very welcoming bunch in the challenge section, so -imho- there isn't a better time or place to get into recording than here. And the benefits to your musical efforts are quantifiable, trust me ?

Yes you are right. And I am thankfull for that. Its been a year since I joined GFSA and the comps have really upped my playing. I am very gratefull. I intend entering the next comp!!

T'was fun indeed!

Because Hasie did 90% of the work on our track, I'll let him choose the theme for the next one!

Ha. I wil suggest one, but you also have to.

Hasie

Sheez people. I'm struggling to come up with ideas. Two so far:

1. The opposite style of what you usually play.
2. Remember the legends... But there will be too many copyright issues.

evolucian

The legend that is Christmas? Hehehe....

Hasie

We did a Christmas one last year and did not want to do it again this year.

Maybe Grinch carols.

evolucian

Sounds like a lot of diminished and augmentations in that one. Missed last years too... I'll have to listen to those. Asstonal carols

The opposite style...I guess the only style that I never play is classical. Don't mind listening to it, like seeing people play it, but hell's bells if I'm gonna do it ?

We've just done in the style of, which is a bit similar to legends? Although with all the peeps shuffling off this mortal coil in 2016 (Ali, Bowie, Prince, Cohen, Natalie Cole and so many more - let's face it 2016 sucked) - the last one challenge could have easily been a tribute.

Been a while since we had a metal one - something along the lines of high gain/high energy? But I'm biased, I wanna work on me' djent-y grooves.

peterleroux

I like the 'opposite style' idea- being pushed out of your comfort zone is always good. A few others ways of getting out of your comfort zone:

alternate tuning- pick an unfamiliar tuning and jam out with it- see what happens
Try putting a capo all the way up the neck, or borrow a bass or mandolin from someone
odd meter- if your DAW allows, write something in 5/4, 7/8 etc.

Stoffeltoo

never tried metal, maybe a first? Shucks that's really going to put me on the edge of the abyss. ?
As to alternate tunings does drop D count? Maybe i might pull something off there ???

Never fear. You nailed the blues vibe in your last submission so you've always got that real music to fall back on 8)

The closest I got to dropped tuned was playing a dropped Epi LP ... literally dropped... lol.

I once downtuned my PRS SE 24 one whole step and it sounded EPIC! My brain just doesn't comprehend the change so well... so I'd have to really work on the alternate tuning stuff.

evolucian

I like the opposite idea, but quite frankly, where would I fall in there? Is it opposite to what you normally play? Do I attempt something left handed in my many faceted styles? Unless I just sit it out, pffft.

evolucian

Unless it's in a style I've never recorded for the comps or ever?

:roflmao:

high gain/high energy could mean punk, metal, djent, rock - everything is open to interpretation! Though -maybe too much interpretation- maybe cool to try and do a challenge where we are competing more directly (specific genre or specific fx, etc...). Sheesh, we can even try the lyric one y'all were thinking about a few challenges back?

Stoffeltoo wrote As to alternate tunings does drop D count?

I'd say...yes! That and a open D (dadgad) is about the only alternate tunings I've tried with any intent. But I'm generally not a fan, too lazy for the effort :-[

studmissile

Sounds like the 80s?

Hasie

Metal/high gain theme sounds great. I haven't played metal (tried to) in a long time.
