This month's challenge was "in the style of..."

A diverse range of entries, something for everyone!

Let's have two groups this month : Pool A : Warrenpridgeon, Stoffeltoo, Hasie & PaulE, Pool B : Studmissile, Meron Rigas

Pool A Warrenpridgeon - Flying Highhttp://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/warrenpridgeon.mp3 It came out in the style of Warren...

Stoffeltoo - Discipline blues http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/stoffeltoo.mp3 Style/inspiration: slow bluesy rock Three tracks: Drums, Rhythm and Bass sequenced in Band in a Box for track 1, Fender USA special and a Digitech RP360XP pedal for track 2 with vocals on top on track 3. All recorded in Reaper and MP3 done in Audacity

This one was fun to create and tested my skills to the limit as I am not really a lead guitarist.

Hasie and Paul E - Kaila’s Lullaby http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/hasiepaule.mp3 In the style of (attempted) Randy Willhite. A lot of pieces in the progressive series guitar method books, are by Randy,

Pool B Studmissile - Pussyfooting http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/studmissile.mp3 "In the style of..." Early Bob Seger, a lot of my stuff is roots rock influenced, the riff was Seger inspired whilst the solo seemed to morph into something Hershal Yatovitz would do with Chris Isaak, another influence.

Meron Rigas - Layer Cake http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/meronrigas.mp3 Fantasy Jam session featuring... Bass : Joe Dart (vulfpeck) rocking a 5 string bass Guitar : Niles Rodgers (The Legend!) on the strat Keys : Nils Frahm strutting the pimpocaster Percussion/Loops : Sergio Mendes & Brazil beat mashing some ableton loops

But honestly, it ended up sounding like me having another funky flavoured ambient jam ::)

Spent some time listening to the entries. Again high quality submissions for this month. Lots of planning and work put into the recordings. Special mention to Hasie and Paul E for their acoustic collaboration entry, always a soft spot in my book.

Some comments, even toward my own entry

Warren: Awesome guitar skill and use of effects could have used more reverb on the voice. You have also shown that sometimes less is more with the sudden stops in the song which builds tension and the riff at the end a stunner.

Paul E and Hasie: Most haunting and inspiring piece of music. Beautifully recorded and presented, Well done. Hasie you and Paul have upped the bar on acoustic guitar. Was lekker to listen and just enjoy the music

Stoffeltoo: In comparison to the other entries, my own crit, Back ground too soft, vocals too loud, tops and tails not too clean. (This happens if a person sits in the studio and tries to figure the "best" sound and get blinded by audio bias

Stud: A very catchy tune indeed, found myself humming it after listening. Tops and tails perfect and the Chris Issac style on top of Bob Seeger.... Brilliant

Meron: Oi! That Bass! Liked the funk vibe. The Pimpocaster really made a difference and cudo's to the guitarist. Commercial quality indeed.
Now that was pleasant to listen to! All of them 8)
And flippen difficult to make a decision on my votes. Without wanting to sound like a libtard I reckon all the entries are winners
The standard is really improving. I definitely won't be submitting an entry any time soon

One thing that stands out for me is Studmissile's vocals. South Africans singing, from garage bands to the professional artists, always sounds like south africans singing, whereas the Stud pulled off an "international" vocal performance in my opinion.

I haven't voted yet. Need to give it some thought focussing on the packages while blanking out the vocals where Stud is in a different league and the closet millennial in me thinks it might be an unfair advantage and influencing my judgement :?
VERY good entries this time round. Tough call considering the variety to choose from but made my vote.
Excellent entries everyone! :goodtimes:
Nice work everyone!

Warren- great voice, great tone, liked the song

Stoffeltoo- I really like the tone on the electric, the blues feel and your voice

Hasie and Paul E- delicate, clear recording- sounds great. How did the collaboration go? Did you get together or pass the file back and forth to do the recording? I like the contrast between the two guitars.

Studmissile- I like this dirty tone on the lead and the chunking muted rhythm part- nice work!

Meron-Love the bass groove and the bright, punchy modern tone (Is that your Curbow?). Guitar work is cool, especially the MIDI piano stuff- really versatile instrument

My votes are in!
(Had to change my selection a couple of times and sometimes doubting if it is the "right" choice)
All entries upped the bar, which in itself is a feather in the cap to every participant.
Now we wait....
This was the first song I'd ever written and recorded from start to finish so I'm busy learning song writing and recording. Was all done through my line 6 Pod HD500X. Used some R80 microphone I got a while back for mucking around with.

Pretty pleased with how it came out in the end.

Paul E and Hasie: Very well done. Intricate but not overly complex. Hit the nail on the head with the lullaby. Is it a compliment or insult if it made me feel drowsy towards the end? lol

Stoffeltoo: You really nailed your slow bluesy rock! I picture this song at a military dance on grainy film. I see you say "recorded in Reaper and MP3 done in Audacity... I mixdown straight to MP3 in Reaper, is there a benefit to doing it through Audacity?

Stud: Excellent tune! Liked the vibe and energy. Nailed the tone and feel.

Meron: Everyone loves cake ? Very funky feel to the song. Sounds like this could fit into "undercover brother" hehe.
Well wow!

I'm kinda glad I didn't enter this one. I would have sucked!

Guys - sheez - excellent stuff all round!!!

Warren: Was there some Kurt Cobain influence? Loved the riff at the end. Missed the drums…

Stoffeltoo: Loved the rhythm and lead mix. Nice mellow melody. Dig it!

Hasie and Paul E: Stunning guitar work gents. I seriously had goosebumps. Was anxiously waiting for the vocals to start…

Stud: Now where would I have heard this before… you are officially disqualified for being too awesome. Love your work man!

Meron: Funky love! Really digged it. Something completely different imo. Nice grooves and that Bass! Excellent.

Well done everyone. The bar is officially raised! :goodtimes:

Not enough tracks available and not enough time ?
Maybe next time I can add drums.
Thank you for all the positive feedback!

peterleroux, the process was as follows:
I e-mailed the sheet music to Paul E. He recorded the main guitar track and sent me a dropbox link to a wave file.
I recorded 3 much simpler tracks (2 electric and 1 bass).
Then I downloaded and imported Paul E's recording into the DAW.
Mixed for balance and created the mp3.

I must mention that I think Paul E is a human metronome. ?

Hi Warren. Not a benefit but helps as my Reaper version does not have LAME for direct rendering to mp3.
Audacity does have lame so simple to export the rendered wave and do mp3 render. Long way I know. My middle name is sukkel.
Man there is some talent up in here!!!!

I suck at writing my own tunes, so was awesome to play someone else's original! Hasie, was awesome to collab and you finished off the tune super well! Well done, big props to you!
Hasie & PaulE : Great collaboration gents - please both take a bow! Way outside my expectations, I reckon you both rose to the challenge this month!

Stofelltoo : Your 1st blues track? For me, you got the bluesy chug spot on, a kinda Chuck Berry era shuffle? Lead fits the track nicely too - take a bow for going outside your comfort zone!

Warren :
Your best entry yet, solid composition and performance(s) across rhythm, vocals and lead add drums and it'd be complete?

Studmissile : As always, rocking! Dig the guitar tones, vocals are a step up (+1 to footapologist's comments) and the use of reverb to glue the track together was perfect imho - possibly your best mix thus far?
wern101 wrote: I'm kinda glad I didn't enter this one. I would have sucked!

I reckon we are a very welcoming bunch in the challenge section, so -imho- there isn't a better time or place to get into recording than here. And the benefits to your musical efforts are quantifiable, trust me ?

And the more entries we get, the more exposure we have to music outside what we would normally listen to - which is only a good thing!

Thanks Peter - The Curbow was retired a few months ago, decided to keep the hofner relic instead - but you are very close - it's the Cort Artisan 5 string (same pups as the Curbow), it does have a very similar sound! The pimpocaster is a ^%$ to use, but a handy thing to have around - having something that can drive software instruments is useful - although I can't help thinking learning to play keys would be soooo much easier in the long run.

Bwahahaaa - you've uncovered my secret desire - compose C-grade funk for B-grade movies. If you've ever heard of a game called Interstate76, then you'll understand where I contracted my funk infection ?
Thanks for the kind and inspiring words gentlemen.

Warrenpridgeon - Flying High': Great tone, very impressive soloing, would love to hear this with a drum track.

Stoffeltoo - Discipline blues: Guitars a little lost in the mix, which is a pity cause that's some cool blues playing!

Hasie and Paul E - Kaila’s Lullaby: Harmonies compliment one another so well, a very lucid collaboration, well done guys.

Meron Rigas - Layer Cake: Loved it, an eclectic selection of influential musicians and wonderfully executed.

Thanks Paul. We should do this again in the future.

Well done Hasie and PaulE. :applause: :applause:Your song was well presented and audibly very pleasing. Perseverance pays off and a special hand clap to Paul for rising to the occasion for a collaboration.
?
Thanks everyone. Thanks Paul for the collab, your recording and playing was flawless.
