Disclaimer : I wouldn't have been trawling Raru's site if I didn't play in a band with a coupla fellows who work there.

But since I did, I saw they had a pretty damn good deal on strings! 6 packs for R499 and you can mix n match classical/acoustic/electric guitars to make up the bundle.

I'm not blown away by the selection of brands (Ernie ball, D'addario, Fender), but they do have a impressive range of gauges, including the heavy bottom/skinny tops & even a set for 8 stringers!

Bassist still getting no love though (aside from a 6 string set for R315) ?
    Not much of a deal?!
I just had a friend bring me back 4 packs of strings from the states at $5 each.

Yes and no...I'm all for competition - especially for those who can't get to a music store (or only have one in a reasonable distance).

I'm lucky, I get honorary junkie discounts - but not everybody lives in metropolitan area and/or can negotiate discounts on gear. Even so, I wouldn't get 6x8strings sets (R215/ea) for R499.

The exchange rate atm isn't as terrible as it has been recently (R13.5:$1), so $5 is a good deal. But if you shipped them and got charged vat too...well it would work out similar I reckon?

Something else to think about...If I want to visit Mars Music, it's a 25km round trip (+/- R35 petrol) + R18/hr parking...If I take the MyCiti bus (I do if I have to go into the CBD), it's still R25 for a round trip.
well, after I was quoted R215 for a normal pack of Fender 3150 strings, after discount, almost choking and dying in the shop, I was glad that my friend was still in the states.

Geezzz...I've still got a few sets of 3150 (bullet ends) in 11's waiting for when I have another SRV attack (tune to Eb) . Think I got them from Bothers on sale at R60/set!

Recently, string prices are no joke. And bass strings are not exactly cheap... double whammy :'(

I've only really ever used Elixirs, but dam they're expensive. So, thinking of getting a couple packs of these as backups and for those times when I don't have R300 for a set of strings for a once off type show ?
Not used that set, but I've used other gauges & bass strings in the XL range of D'addario strings. I like the slightly slicker feel of the XL's compared to other brands non coated strings. One thing I did noticed about the XL bass strings is that after three months my set was d-e-a-d, granted I was putting in 2hrs/day minimum but I thought 3mths was ridiculous (apparently not, googlle told me this was about par)

If you are looking at alternative to Elixir's - Ernie Ball do a coated set (titanium?), D'addario (EXP - I've just put a set my pimpocaster, they feel nice - no idea how long they'll last) and there's also the NYXL's (not specifically a long life set, but apparently they do last - I've a got 6mth old set on a bass and I'm liking them a lot - price aside).
I personally prefer EXPs to Elixirs, and last as long.

D'addario XLs are great strings but you are looking at 3 to 4 months. Also the EJs series (phosphor bronze) are wonderful acoustic strings. I'll always grab a couple of these on sale!

Thanks for the heads up Meron

Why do you prefer the EXPs? I tried them once and didn't like the feel or sound, but it was a good while ago, so maybe I should retry them.
