Hey guys and gals.
This is going to be a very noob question, but I gotta ask.
So I have a Sony surround sound system. It has 5 surround sound speakers and a sub. A while ago it started giving problems so it had to be replaced. The speakers are in top condition as well as the built in amp. The problem was with the sound mode selector that changes from 'surround' to 'voice' to etc etc. (don't know what you call them)
So my thinking was, can I use these speakers and AMP to build a guitar amp? I know there is a big difference between guitar amp and HiFi setup, but practically, is this doable? Has someone done it successfully before? Thus, build a guitar amp with 5 smaller speakers.
I would assume that some proper guitar AMP tech would have to go into it, but it wouldn't be that much would it? ☹
Your opinions will make me dive in... or not.
Thanks!

You can but it'll sound rubbish. The speakers are all wrong. Also, building a decent solid state guitar amp is a lot harder than building a valve amp.

+1 to EZ's comments.
I used a 5.1 surround system to monitor my interface (guitar rig) live. And it works, but after trying out a teeny ibanez troubadour 10w as a mono monitor I have to admit that the surround system I was using sounded really bad compared to the crappy 10w troubadour.
Clean tones lacked presence on the 5.1 and distorted tones sounded fuzzy/indistinct. And like EZ said, it's probably down to the speakers.
One would think that they both full range speakers and should be comparable. They're not. Not even close...and that's a cheep 10w acoustic amp. I'd rather have two of those (running in stereo ) than use a surround system.

In fairness though, those Ibanez Troubadours have always been very nice little acoustic amps.
In fact Ibanez amps in general are a lot nicer than their reputation suggests.
That said, I also don't think it's worth trying to convert your surround sound system into a guitar amp.

Thanks guys.
I had a feeling it would be this way. But at least now I know the reasons. I'll have to go do some study on 'proper' guitar amp speakers then...
Guess i'll use the speakers for a different project. Maybe a sound bar, or hook em up to the existing system or something.
thanks again!
